Newbie silents

I have a couple of friends I'm trying to convince of the value of silent film. If you were trying to convince someone that silents are a worthy and viable art form, what five films would you recommend?

I have my own ideas, but I'd like yours. Remember, these are neophytes.

You really need to watch it. William Powell and Kay Fwancis in an absolutely delightful precode romcom.

Re: Netflix Streaming Films that Are Only on R2 DVDs

Courtney got me a Roku for Christmas. It's a box that allows me to stream internet video from Netflix, Amazon movies, YouTube and other online sources to my TV. It supports a wide variety of channels, most of which are either free or cheap -- I have Drive-In Classics, Cowboy Classics, and Pub-D-TV (...

Re: Buster Keaton

Interesting review, but I must confess I don't see how Lloyd's character had less moral weight than either Keaton or Chaplin, unless that dollar gag in Safety Last is the only way Lloyd's character is defined. But if so, then we can apply the same thing to Chaplin, using nearly a similar gag in The...

Re: Buster Keaton

I liked some of Hot Water and like Safety Last , who couldn't appreciate Safety Last? I didn't like it much at all -- in fact, it put me off Lloyd for a long time. Here's part of a review I wrote on imdb years ago: Lloyd had an understanding of gags, and the physical prowess to pull them off, but h...

Re: Happy birthday Movieman1957!

The last few years have been trying ones for me, and it deserves saying: if not for Chris, there wouldn't be an SSO today. He is the rock on which this site stands. He has kept the faith when I was ready to give up. If you love this site, and it's a part of your every day internet life, it's he that...

Re: R.I.P. Dennis Hopper

I am crushed by this news. As a bonafide 80s child, his stellar performances in Blue Velvet, River's Edge and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 were a major part of my young adulthood.

We're together in dreams, dude.
