Re: The Greed of William Hart
To which I'll adjoin The Mad Magician (1954). Beautiful period look and feel. The writers knew that some contemporary filmgoers would know that stage makeup, then, consisted largely of greasepaint, and not rubber appliances (and some did). How much more sophisticated modern audiences are! But, back ...

Re: The Greed of William Hart
The restored version is good (probably the one on your DVD, W.G.). Hopkins comes to what can truly be described as a gruesome end. The last time I watched the film, I looked up the real Hopkins. He died peacefully, in bed.

Re: The Greed of William Hart
The Greed of William Hart (as with other Slaughter pictures) is an acquired taste. To judge from comments on various forums, and customer reviews, many lovers of old movies in the US enjoy his work. It will strike some as stagey or corny, but it's great fun to see Tod go to his ghoulish work for al...

The Greed of William Hart
Tod Slaughter has a bit of a cult following - even in the US (which surprised me when I learned of it, some years ago). The Greed of William Hart (1948) is one of Tod's last films - and one of the best. The story and screenplay, by John Gilling, was later reworked as the much seedier, The Flesh and ...

Re: George Raft
Yes, one of the lesser convincing moments of the film. According to one source, Raft's comment upon the completed The Maltese Falcon "There but for the grace of me, go I." was his only recorded witticism, which - needless to say - is nonsense. I remember hearing a BBC Radio interview with ...

Re: George Raft
A Bullet for Joey is one of my favourite Raft pictures. His opening scene is a belter. Raft listens to Steven Geray's pitch about imagining being a step away from his native soil (over the Canadian border), Raft, a note of longing in his voice replies: "Just for one minute." It's so simpl...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
It's many years since I read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I liked the fact that it is actually set in the 18th Century (I have a fondness for the 18th and 17th Centuries). However, it's least convincing conceit (apart from the main premise) is the eloquence attained by the monster while hiding-out. ...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
Actually though, it isn't bad It certainly isn't! Production values aren't much. It's not exactly intellectual. But it's fun, exciting, silly in a good way. I like it. I've rarely seen Lon in something I didn't enjoy. Don't even get me going on THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE. That's terrifying! I've not seen...

Indestructible Man (1956). Cheapo Productions proudly present! Actually though, it isn't bad. The only dialogue Lon gets in this is a few lines in the opening scenes, as his character, Charles "Butcher" Benton speaks - softly and menacingly - to his crooked lawyer, Paul Lowe (Ross Elliot)...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
One of Bela's memorable lines in DRACULA is: "I never drink . . . wine"(!). Carradine's "Baron Latos" (in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN) - on the other hand - seems to have no difficulty in enjoying an evening's hospitality with Herr Hussmann (Sig Ruman), complete with "...wine from...

John Carradine on HOUSE OF DRACULA: "...to date, I have the distinction of being the only actor who looked the part as visualized by Bram Stoker in 1897. Dracula was a Magyar. When he first appears to Jonathan Harker he is an old man with long white hair and a moustache. It would have been impo...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
Seeing Dracula Has Risen From His Grave (1969) for the first time this week, I kept wondering how Dracula was able to go outdoors when the sun was up. Those Hammer movies made up the vampire rules as they went along, don't you think? I also chuckled when I realized that innkeepers, barmaids, and th...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?
My brother, Jim, made exactly the same point when we watched the movie a few nights ago. And, while Harker attends to Valerie Gaunt, why does Drac get out of his coffin, creep upstairs, then, come back down to sort out Mr. Harker? Also, Drac and his lady friend lie in lidless stone sarcophagi. The c...
