Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Jeffrey, I have a hard time keeping up, but I absolutely trust your knowledge of what's happening in the silent film world and use your input and suggestions often when planning future projects.

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

TikiSoo - almost all of our revenue comes from our cable/satellite affiliates. As you suggest, that's very rare in the television world. As most people know, what seems to happen is that a channel starts out with a niche (A&E, AMC, Bravo, etc.), then once they have a certain level of distributio...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Carrie, those are all great suggestions - while w don't have the rights to them at the moment my guess is we could obtain them, so I am noting those as requests.

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Lynn, the documentary will be a very extensive, in-depth look at the film industry, from the end of the 19th century to the demise of the studio era. That's pretty much all I can say about it, but I'm confident it will be very good based on scripts and some early rough cuts of the first couple of ep...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Moxie: 1. Yes, over 99% of what we play are 35mm films transferred onto digibeta. As several people know, there were a couple of times this year that 16mm transfers were the only option for us, but that's very rare. 2. We're in discussions with WB for broader access to their library, but that deal h...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Chris, I'm not sure I understand your question about anniversary programming. Nothing specific to TCM's 15th anniversary is coming up. As for the microsite, I completely agree. Our web staff does an incredible job and I think this month's site feature the posters for Summer Under the Stars is the be...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

I know I need to reply to several questions - it was a busy day at work and I'm off to dinner, but I will try to get to all of them tonight. Thank you.

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Jezebel38 - on "Crime Without Passion" the issue was materials from Universal (which owns the Paramount library). We're trying to work with them as much as possible to create quality video masters for a lot of their films but it's a long process. I am confident that someday we will be able...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Jezebel38, there's a staff of 5 in the programming department, including me. Everyone is very knowledgeable about movies (and several people in other departments are incredibly knowledgeable as well), but nobody had had to take a specific movie test - that sort of comes up in the interview process. ...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

MichiganJ - thanks for the comment, but believe it or not we don't consider ratings when making programming decisions. In fact, we don't even get ratings information from Nielsen. At one point we did some special reports from them just to see what movies had the biggest audience and who was watching...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Nancy, other CharlieT and coffeedan - thanks for the suggestions. The only caveat I have is that some films are unavailable due to materials. I'm not saying that's the situation with any of those that you requested, but that's a possibility. But we can look into the situation for each one (we do hav...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Jeffrey, you simply know much more than I do about the condition of many of these films, but I will just say that we pay attention to your suggestions and try to do what we can. And I think we're close to being able to play "Bardleys the Magnificent."

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

Joe, of course I remember you. It was a pleasure to meet you and your daughter. I also remember obtaining a play of "Angel in My Pocket" at your request (I am remembering that correctly, aren't I?). I will make sure to put this down as a request also, I do think it's a film we will be able...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

moirafinnie - we are playing more of both Universal and Paramount, maybe not as much as a lot of people would like, but definitely a lot more than we have in the last few years. As I said in an earlier reply, we are limited in the number that we can play but at least we do have some access, more tha...

Re: The Forum for Questions for Charlie Tabesh

ChiO - no, we've never done any sort of research at all on what festivals or films we want to play. We've done some marketing research here and there to see how the brand is doing but never anything to help determine what to play. As for the "typical" TCM viewer, I think we have two primar...
