Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Carl, Welcome to the Oasis and thanks for joining us! I am reading your latest book right now and am thoroughly enjoying it. I didn't know much about Brennan, who is one of my favorite character actors, beyond the usual facts so your book has been engrossing. I was wondering if you could talk a bit...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

You mention two of those funny stories, Moira. I like the one about Gabby Hayes. Sometimes fans confused the two actors. When Brennan was approached by a fan who asked "Mr. Hayes" for his autography, Brennan obliged signing as Gabby Hayes, but then he added a p.s. which said, "Of cour...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

By the way, Sue and Moira, you have a still from FURY, which Fritz Lang directed. That is where he first worked with Walter Brennan, who had a small role in the film. Brennan is just amazing in this role, as I try to convey in my biography. And Lang was very impressed and later specifically requeste...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

You're welcome Sue. It was my pleasure. I also invite your readers to contact me via my website if other questions occur to them. There are questions I would like to put to Walter Brennan. For example, I would want to go over the sequence of events that led him to become outspoken about in political...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

I've revised several of my biographies: Lillian Hellman, Norman Mailer, Rebecca West. I've just completed a revised and updated biography of Susan Sontag that will appear next year. There is always new material or new interpretations coming along, so I'm never surprised to hear about another biograp...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Carl, Thanks for answering so many of our questions so well. What is it like when you finish a biography-- for example, when you finished all the interviews and research and writing the book on Brennan, did you feel 'closer' to understanding the subject, or are there some things that remain shroude...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Brennan's strong support for the Screen Actors Guild grew out of his own experience of mistreatment on movie sets. He understood actors needed protection. Why he did not see the same as true of other kinds of unions, I don't know, and in fact I'm not sure he did not have some sympathy for union orga...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Hello, Mr. Rollyson (Hi, Moira!) Congrats on your new book! I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but over the years I have read your Susan Sontag, the Day by Day Marilyn, and Dana Andrews. Each was quite good and I enjoyed them all so I know I'll like your Walter Brennan. Were you able to speak w...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Hello Mr. Rollyson and welcome to the Silver Screen Oasis. Congratulations on your book about the outstanding character actor Walter Brennan. Of his films did Mr. Brennan have a favorite role? Also who were among his favorite co-stars? And who if any, did he not much care for in the industry? I tha...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

I would guess that more people know the John Ford version of Three Godfathers made with John Wayne. I compare that version to the Brennan-Stone-Morris, and I think Ford's film does not come out well. William Wyler also did a version called "Hell's Heroes," which I liked very much, although...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Welcome Carl. As a kid I never missed watching THE REAL MCCOYS and Brennan was truly the heart and center of this show. Did he see the series as his career "capper"? What roles was he proudest of? Which actors were his personal friends off the set? Thanks! Scott Brennan did not think of t...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Carl, we are so happy that you have chosen this time to visit with us about Walter Brennan and your latest biography. I was moved by Brennan's performance in To Have and Have Not , and many of his other character roles, but I think the film in which I felt most affectected by one of his performance...

Re: Walter Brennan Biographer Carl Rollyson Visits 11/7 & 11/8

Do you think that Brennan's background affected his evolution as an actor? After reading your descriptions of his somewhat unruly youth, his WW1 experiences and his occasional bouts of nerves later, is it possible that he used that side of himself in his work? I'm wondering if his experiences as a ...
