Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Had a ball doing this. Programming Director Dennis Millay has been a long time Vitaphone fan for over twenty years, and it was so nice of him to suggest me for this gig. We began the planning this past summer, with me being asked to come up with programming of Vitaphone shorts and features to fill 2...

Can you tell us about the actors in the photo I posted? I'm afraid I don't know much about their contibutions to the Vitaphone era. Are...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Hi Ron, Thanks for being here to answer our questions. I loved the Vitaphone program at this year's TCM Film Festival and am very much looking forward to tomorrow's schedule on TCM. I'm especially eager to see the "Shaw and Lee" and "Sharps and Flats" shorts again. I'm a big Col...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

I think vaudeville has a major lasting legacy both in films after 1930 and still today. So many of the vaudevillians who saw their livelihood disappear around 1930 --- due to radio, talking pictures and the Depression. Some vaudevillians became big stars in movies and on radio, like Jack Benny, Bob ...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

To add to what you posted about how the long-lost WHY BE GOOD? was rediscovered.... other neat aspects were being able to connect with Colleen Moore's children and their attending some of the many public screenings of the restoration. They got to enjoy the film with large audiences and to take in ho...

I love Molly Picon, too! So fabulous you found those, Ron. One of our previous guests, Shayna Ochoa, wrote a little about Molly Picon in her book, Stella! The Mother of Modern Acting , a biography of Stella Adler. http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee485/suesueapplegate/image_zpsvjr3kinn.jpeg Shaw...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Hi! I've learned after 25 years of The Vitaphone Project that you can never say never. Since our inception in 1991, we've found over 6000 soundtrack disks in private hands worldwide. As to your "lost forever" question, in 1993 The Library of Congress found a film can labelled "JAZZ SI...

Here's the stack of Vitaphone disks I found (including one for the Molly Picon short) in New Haven, CT in 2011.

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

I would love to know more about Trixie Friganza too, Ron! I understand that you unveiled a Molly Picon short recently as part of The Vitaphone Project's Unseen Vitaphone Varieties — Part 1 . While I cannot come to the NYC area to enjoy your events. many of us may remember the diminutive Ms. Picon f...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

That's so interesting. Can you share with us other gems that you might have found in the Lewis collection? Actually, Jerry Lewis did not even know he had the Trixie Friganza disk! My friend, 3-D expert and preservationist Bob Furmanek was working for Jerry c. 1990 cataloguing his collection. In a s...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Oh, that's wonderful, Ron! Trixie Friganza is so funny. Can you share with us what you know about her personally and professionally? She was a hugely popular performer in musical comedy and vaudeville at the turn of the last century. She was also very active in women's rights, was a vigorous suffra...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Ron- Tell the story you told me about the reactions you've gotten from older people when they've been able to see the Vitaphone shorts after so many years, including relatives that you've been able to find. Mrs. Osborne PS I'm now a huge fan of Shaw and Lee and I am delighted to see that Jimmy Conl...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

We they are ALL favorites! In our intros on TCM on 12/5 I give some background on the discovery, restoration or performers in the shorts. So many of these early Vitaphone shorts are actually filmed captures of the acts of some of the greatest vaudevillians of the period. So my favorites include vaud...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Happy Saturday Ron! That is a fabulous picture of you with Ben Mankiewicz by the way. Did Fox have an early version of Vitaphone? For example with the Fox Movietone News? I'm confused about that and what, if any, the difference was with their process and Vitaphone. Many thanks, Mrs. Osborne Movieto...

Re: WELCOME TCM GUEST PROGRAMMER RON HUTCHINSON DECEMBER 3 & 4.

Director Roy Mack specialized in musical Vitaphone shorts, first in Hollywood in 1929 where he helmed some early Technicolor shorts, then through the thirties at Vitaphone's Brooklyn studios. He previously had worked on Broadway so he had a great background for this.
