Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME
I also was surprised that there were less than a handful of post-studio-era films on this list. While musical is my least favorite film genre, as you note, what I also call the essential films were on the list (i.e. my favorite musicals). A little light with regards to Fred and Ginger but that is b...

Re: I Just Watched...
Edna is another name that should stay in the past. (And I had an aunt named that as well!) As should Eunice and Bertha and Ethel and Alma and Velma (although we once had a neighbor, now passed on, named Velma and she was a wonderful neighbor) AGREED!! Alma and Velma aren't quite as bad as the other...

Re: I Just Watched...
We have to remember that Gertrude and Ethel were the Taylor and Madison of their day. Or that Taylor and Madison will once seem as absurdly old-fashioned as Gertrude and Ethel do now. +1 Heather Just looked the name Heather up. It entered the top 200 names for girls in the US in 1963, and exited sa...

Yes, I had a great-aunt named Gertrude, an aunt named Ethel. My parents were introduced by a woman named Edna. When I was looking up Max Showalter, his parents were Ira and Elma Showalter. We have to remember that Gertrude and Ethel were the Taylor and Madison of their day. Or that Taylor and Madis...

Re: AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME
All in all, this is the best list from AFT I've ever seen. Sure, it's not mine, but it's not heavily weighted toward recent films, and it includes some essential films. I also was surprised that there were less than a handful of post-studio-era films on this list. While musical is my least favorite...

also, I hate to speculate, but FANTASTIC AS SHE IS, I get the sense the role came very naturally to LANSBURY and she had A BLAST doing it- the 1970s were kind of the beginning of the whole "you need to suffer and be miserable and lose or gain 60 pounds in order to get a nomination" trend ...

Right. Four "accidental" gunshots . . . It could be even more outrageous. It could have been like that notorious 1980 murder case involving the Lizzie Borden of the 20th century who gave another woman 40 whacks with an axe.... and was then acquitted on self-defense. The case was so shocki...
