Re: I Just Watched...

Though One Is a Lonely Number is no great shakes and hardly a cinematic landmark, it accurately captures the mood and manners of its time. It also has a more honest resolution than the fantasy ending of An Unmarried Woman . I knew several women whose marriages broke up in the 1970s. Most never re-ma...

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

Mandy Patinkin is hot as Avigdor in YENTL. But he looks so much like one of my uncles that there's no fun in that for me! https://i.imgur.com/0WNDONhl.png https://i.imgur.com/O6F3XIel.png https://i.imgur.com/i64x0nPl.png He sure doesn't look like any of my uncles, so I guess we can make a date and ...

Re: I Just Watched...

I never get tired of A FACE IN THE CROWD (which is a good thing since they air it so much, lol) so decided to dive in again. Now, some of you might know that my recent great will power (not when it comes to Lay's Dill Pickle potato chips) concerning maintaining a calm attitude towards a certain mai...

Re: I Just Watched...

One of the other fun things about THE MIND READER (1933) was that many of the women's costumes featured one of the more curious fashion trends of the time, which was to have TWO ENTIRE MINKS WITH HEADS and GLASS-EYES AND CLAWS ATTACHED, sort of lashed together and wrapped about the body- giving off...

Re: I Just Watched...

Au hasard Balthazar (1966). Parallel stories of donkey and French village girl each suffering unrelenting cases of "sh!t happens". This is one of those movies where I wonder what the critics who select the films for lists like the Sight and Sound all-time lists are smoking. It's not a bad...

Re: May Criterion Channel line-up

I also like TEA WITH MUSSOLINI although I only saw it once. I actually saw this movie in the theater in 1999 with my mother and grandmother. They both loved it. I'm looking forward to watching it again to see what the adult me will think about it. I remember thinking how wonderful Cher was in her r...

That's what I get for using Wiki instead of keeping a record of films seen. 28 Up is a huge favorite.

I failed to include Almost You in my favorites for 1984. It's another quirky little gem that manages the dance between comedy and drama very well.

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project

1984 : Something must have been in the water (or some other substance) to create so many quirky films this year, though there were also plenty of the other kind. A good year, all in all. Quirky Favorites : Choose Me This Is Spinal Tap Broadway Danny Rose Repo Man Blood Simple Almost You Other Favor...

Re: I Just Watched...

We just watched "The Case of the Treacherous Toupee" on Perry Mason. Season 4, Episode 1. William Talman is back as Hamilton Burger, so the team is reunited. And who is that handsome young man playing the no-good stepson? Why, none other than Robert Redford. What a treat.

Re: MUSINGS, PONDERINGS, RUMINATIONS AND FANCIES

Just once I'd love to see THE BIRDS and MARNIE without an intro or outro mentioning Hitchcock's misogynistic treatment of women, Tippi Hedren in particular (and now I've learned he also sexually harrassed Diane Baker). Last night I heard that a major theme in his movies is "the dominant male&q...

Re: Ranking Only the Best (and the Very Worst) of a Movie Year Project

1962: the last great year of the classic era. One of the best years ever. Darn it, I've taped but haven't watched Sundays and Cybèle . Two all-time favorites : Lawrence of Arabia The Manchurian Candidate Favorites (alphabetical): All Fall Down Cape Fear Cleo from 5 to 7 David and Lisa Days of Wine a...

Re: I Just Watched...

Assorted notes.... Desperate Characters (1971) is a deeply melancholic film about bruised, unhappy lives in Brooklyn. It's a very bleak affair, with no relief from the gloom and likely stands as one of the grimmest Hollywood films I can recall seeing, but it is very astutely written both in charact...
