Welcome to Happy & Flattered

Welcome Julie! FYI friends: Julie is JulieAH over on the TCM site. I'm glad that you found us. Jon Parker and Pktrekgirl are both our Technical Administrators here and the place wouldn't exist without them! They're the greatest. Hope that more of the numerous people who've been invited will soon jo...

Nine

I just saw Rob Marshall 's last non-musical film, Memoirs of a Geisha , which was a beautiful eye-full of Japanese arts and crafts. Wish that it had captured more of the book's enchantment, but hope for the best for Nine . I also wish that Raul Julia & Anita Morris were still with us, though I l...

A Doris Day Essential?

Couldn't agree more about the poor choice of That Touch of Mink as one of The Essentials . Good Lord, an essential piece of cultural kitsch, maybe--but if I really wanted to pick an essential Doris Day movie it might be On Moonlight Bay (1951), Love Me or Leave Me (1956) or even better, Young Man Wi...

Charlie Chaplin Features on Monday, April 16th

http://plasticage.net/gallery/albums/userpics/chaplinsmall.jpg Charles Chaplin was born 118 years ago tomorrow. TCM has a bouquet of films prepared in his honor, starting at dawn. After reading the comments about The Great Dictator (1940) as a somewhat dubious choice for one of The Essentials last ...

Our Gang Redux:Spanky-Froggy-Darla-Whitey & who's Alfalf

Kyle, I'm so glad that you and everyone are here. I suspect that Lynn may check in later today when she can. The impetus behind this group was pretty simple: My reason for beginning this group was my frustration caused by constantly trying to sift through the rampant antagonism found over on the go...

My Darling Clementine's use of visual & spiritual shadow

Hard to choose from Mr. Ford's impressive list of westerns although my choice is "My Darling Clementine" (1946). His black and white film is as lush as many color films you see. His use of shadow is powerful Mongo, I'd forgotten about the deft use of b & w shadows in My Darling Clemen...

Dick Powell, Tough Guy?

Despite his lightweight musical past, I prefer Dick Powell when he became hard-boiled in the '40s playing Philip Marlowe in Murder, My Sweet . I've read that Raymond Chandler preferred Powell as well, since he thought that the actor conveyed the "boy scout" beneath the cynical veneer of hi...

The Ox Bow Incident

Best moment in The Ox Bow Incident: when Henry Fonda reads the letter to Harry Morgan and Wellman chose to show only part of Fonda's face blocked by Morgan. A powerful, restrained moment and one of Fonda's best understated roles.

Have you seen the dvd?

Give Stingaree a chance!

Live dangerously, Sandy. I think that you're as susceptible as I am to that Dunne-Dix combo! If nothing else, I think that it'll make you smile. Good news is that it's also a brief film, if you don't like it. It was fun, especially Una's moments.

Mongo, so glad to see you among us!

People Section

Would it be helpful to have an In Celebration section to praise longtime favorites or new discoveries made by individual posters in the world of classic film? Would it be acceptable to have an In Memoriam section along with an In Celebration area to note the death of filmmakers? Jon, I think that pe...

Sergeant Rutledge

Thank goodness you've found your way here, Anne. Hope you like it. Funny that so many people I've spoken with over the years cite Sgt. Rutledge as a favorite Ford film, but it's almost never shown. I'm especially fond of the sequence when Strode and Towers are isolated at the station. The ominous at...

Other films about Mobs, the Media and Justice

I think that Fury without Spencer Tracy and Sylvia Sidney's eloquent perfomances wouldn't have the same impact today. Directorially, I think Fritz Lang's depiction of the convergence of the crowd on the jail and the newsreel footage helped to make it a more dynamic movie as well. Imagine the impact ...
