Re: James Cagney's pre-code films

I loved that electrifying scene between Arliss & Cagney in that early appearance of the star, too. Thank you for this thread. I hope you will have a chance to post about the wonderfully subversive Blonde Crazy (1931) eventually.

Re: Why does Billy Wilder love the state of Ohio?

I wonder if Wilder, as a perceptive emigre to the U.S., felt that Ohio was somehow quintessentially American--which could be good or bad, depending on how jaundiced the filmmaker felt about his adopted homeland when crafting his films?

Re: Where are the stars of yesteryear? (1927 edition)

I would love to have seen Sessue Hayakawa in vaudeville to see if his considerable presence translated to the stage (and his command of English in the '20s). Crane Wilbur went on to considerable success as a screenwriter (film noir, primarily) from the '30s-'60s. Many of the names are a mystery to m...

Re: Convention City- Maybe Still Out There?

Oh, Dan! Thanks for taking the time to share that swell review. Liberty magazine didn't seem to be too outraged by the film's raciness, did they? I would love to hear "Oh, Honeywell" sung by Frank McHugh.

Re: SCOTT EYMAN Q & A on "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

Scott, while we cannot all attend the TCM Film Festivals, we treasure your online visits and I've found each of your books to be among those I turn to repeatedly for their storytelling artistry and factual background. I hope that you will consider this dual style of biography again if you think it a...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN Q & A on "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

Thanks for those answers. I don't blame Gloria Stewart for being upset about his turning down TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, though it's hard to think of any other Atticus Finch than Gregory Peck. Could you please touch on how the two friends worked with John Ford? Did Stewart approach working with the lege...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN Q & A on "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

One of Henry Fonda's best but least known roles appears to be Hitchcock's somber THE WRONG MAN, in a story that reflects real, unpredictable injustice as well as a wife's instability under pressure. http://i.imgur.com/fvo2qgk.jpg Did the elements of this story and the lead character's inability to f...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN Q & A on "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

Scott, you wrote that "Anyone who knew him was aware of the fact that he had cut a swath through Hollywood that Errol Flynn might have envied—not that he got any credit for it," about Jimmy Stewart, not the five-times married (and very handsome) Henry Fonda! I was vaguely aware that Stewar...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN Q & A on "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

Thank you to Scott and all visitors to our site for returning today. In several films, Henry Fonda and James Stewart demonstrated that, while they may have held different political views privately, they were keenly aware of the corrosive effect of violence on a society and individuals. Do you think ...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN TO DISCUSS "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

Stewart's dad was a demanding guy, the biggest presence in the small town. He was quietly appalled at his son's career choice and subtly or not so subtly demeaning about his son's movie career. Stewart never felt he lived up to his father's expectations except in his service in the war. Then he kne...

Re: SCOTT EYMAN to Discuss "HANK & JIM" ON 12/16 & 12/17

They broke each other up all the time. They shared a puckish sense of humor and a sense of the absurd in which they were often the butt of life's jokes. I suspected that they cracked up on-screen together in the delightful performances they gave in On Our Merry Way (it was also easy to believe that...

Thanks for persevering and filling us in on the work that went into this story.

Your book mentions that both men had intense relationships with their fathers. How did their examples and values shape their careers and private lives?
