Well, I just watched Svengali, again. Wow, what a great film! So surreal! I really enjoyed Marian Marsh's performance; she was a cutie! The sets were unbelievable. The streets were crooked, the buildings were crooked, and the stairs were crooked. What a great illusion it created. Barrymore was fanta...

Two I think are great are The Life of Jimmy Dolan (1933), and the remake They Made Me a Criminal (1939). I am a big fan of both Fairbanks Jr. who starred in the first one with Loretta Young, and John Garfield who did a better job in the remake with Ann Sheridan. The great story of a framed guy on th...

This is the kind of film that makes me wish the studio system had been more creative and enterprising in its star combinations. There were so many stars who never got to play opposite each other. When I think of some of the combinations possible, it makes my head spin. Two I would have liked to have...

Well, as I have written before on TCM, Norma was my wife's and my grandfather's favorite actress. She was the first name of a movie star from the Golden Age I ever heard. Seeing her in Marie Antoinette cemented her as one of my all time favorites, too. When I met my wife, we instantly hit if off, bo...

I have nothing but good memories of the Marx Brothers. They were one group of comedy guys of whom my parents not only approved, but one at whom they laughed out loud! So, they have a special place in my memory book. But, you are right, I must have seen too many cause I just never voluntarily pic a M...

Now, back to your original question. One of the teams I have recently discovered through TCM is exactly who you mentioned, Patsy Kelly and Thelma Todd. I think their shorts are very entertaining and they work together like Hope and Crosby! I wish they would show more of them, like a half day all in ...

Aha! Gottcha! Not really. I don't care for, see I can't even remember the name, that movie with Hedy and Bob. Everything I read says they didn't care much for working with each other since their styles were so different, and it shows. Also, Hedy said Bob cut the picture so badly that all of her good...

Oh, gosh! You certainly hit a nerve with me. I have that film, but I haven't watched it in years! I am going to get it out and watch it again. You are so right about the German influence. I missed that long ago when I saw it last, but I know exactly that about which you are speaking! It is really a ...

Well, of course, I have to comment. Susan Lenox is one of my favorites, as well. I love the time scene changes, after Gable leaves her, showing her rise to the affluent postion of mistress of a millionaire. I think her performance is a little stilted, as you said, but appropriate for the character. ...
