I was happy with this year's Summer Under the Stars schedule - several rarities made it onto the list (e.g., Dressler, MacMurray, Novak, Palance) along with the old-hat choices (Tracy, Hepburn, Day, Astaire). And even though their films aren't necessarily rare on TCM, I liked the Chaplin and Laurel/...

I detest what the AFI has done so much, that I've stopped being a member (which I had been since its inception in 1967. I even did volunteer work for them in those early days). Those lists are counter to everything the AFI is meant to be, imo. Actually claiming that one film is better than another ...

Bypassing Stray Dog and Rififi was difficult as well, but I had to narrow down the field somehow. I made the decision to stick with classic English-language noirs and still almost gave up. But both of those films are tremendously well-made, especially the latter. I've truly grown to love most of Das...

For what it's worth, I would like to have added The Reckless Moment , This Gun for Hire , The Lady from Shanghai , and In a Lonely Place . And I'm still trying to figure out if I should edit my list to add Sunset Boulevard , which meets the definition of noir but which - for whatever reason - I neve...

Well, here are mine, though I imagine in another ten minutes I'll be kicking myself for leaving off this title or that one. 1. Double Indemnity (1944) 2. Touch of Evil (1958) 3. Gun Crazy [a.k.a. Deadly is the Female ] (1949) 4. Laura (1944) 5. Night and the City (1950) 6. Out of the Past (1947) 7. ...

Re: We're Talkin' Hitch!
I'm wondering which of his films is your favorite? Or can you limit it to one? I'm one of those who can't limit it to just one. Taking everything into account (acting, direction, cinematography, script, etc.), I think the all-around best film that Hitchcock ever made was Psycho . But in terms of my...

As far as I know Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone had a monogamous relationship, though I realize that aspect doesn't necessarily equate to one having been the love of the other's life. And then I think George and Gracie genuinely loved one another, though George admitted having fooled around. -Stephen

Re: How do we pass the Cinematic Torch?
Hey Lynn, Below are my responses, for what they're worth. Is there a seat at the big top of film (TCM, the channel) for [younger viewers] or should TCM not try to engage young people with their programming for fear that it is a giant step on that slippery slope that will result in the AMC-fication o...

Nice comments, Lynn. Harvey is one of my favorite films as well. I honestly believe Oscar winner Josephine Hull is the strongest performer in the cast, though I do love Stewart as Elwood. True, few actors could have played that role with as much warmth as Stewart, but Hull cracks me up every time I ...

This Day and Age ('33), We are Not Alone ('39)
Gonna give this a shot... Does anyone have either of these titles available for trade? I have an extensive collection of classics (too large to list here) - and would be happy to trade for either of these. I missed the latter when it aired on TCM some time ago and despite my prolonged efforts with t...
I recently acquired several episodes of Arden's 1950s television comedy series Our Miss Brooks , and I've enjoyed it very much - almost as much as the radio version (in fact, several of the television episodes were adapted from the radio scripts). Personally, I find this series much funnier on avera...

Re: Rosalind Russell
Any thoughts, pro or con ? Roz will be July's star of the month on TCM. I'm looking forward to seeing Bob Osborne's take on her films. Several rarities will be shown, including 1950's A Woman of Distinction and Craig's Wife from 1936. I consider Russell one of my favorite actresses. Like Kat...
