Re: What recent films have you seen?

Every time I saw previews for FOXCATCHER, I thought, "Um...OK." And? This is my reaction to most modern movies. I'm sure many of them are good. Some are probably great. They just don't inspire me to spend two hours finding out! And the big Oscar winners. 10 Oscars! 20 Oscars! 600 Oscars! Y...

Re: Westerns

So...(referring to my previous post) It is no surprise that the best of the four westerns is the black and white entry from the 1930s. THE TEXAS RANGERS is tight, dramatic, character oriented. It's an old-fashioned movie. That works for me! What did surprise me is the Tourneur film. Knowing the crea...

Re: Westerns

Most people wouldn't be excited about this, but we classic fans are a rare breed. 4 DVD set, $5.00. THE TEXAS RANGERS. THE LAWLESS BREED. CANYON PASSAGE. KANSAS RAIDERS. Thank you, Target! I've always like Fred MacMurray in "Rangers." A small, unpretentious adventure, very entertaining. &q...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

That Rondo! I like JUNGLE CAPTIVE. My favorite of the "Ape Woman" thrillers. Not that there's much to distinguish one from another. But this one seems to move from shock to shock a little more casually. It's like, "OK. We know what we want. Scary stuff. Excitement. Rondo! The Hell wit...

Re: Could you justify puttin' it on your weekly schedule?

I miss Elmore Leonard a little bit. Not just for his Raylan stories, but the whole Elmore Leonard canon. He wasn't my favorite crime writer. May have been overrated. But his was a unique voice, and almost always entertaining.

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

You know what? I can't remember if I've seen William Castle's MACABRE! It just came up on another site. I said I'd seen it. Now I'm not so sure. The notion of Jim Backus as main character sounds familiar. (It's not something you'd easily forget!) But I sure don't remember much, if anything. If I hav...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

Rondo Hatton is back this weekend in JUNGLE CAPTIVE! I don't know the history of this movie. I believe it's the final installment in a trilogy of "wild woman" stories, on the heels of Acquanetta in CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN. I've probably seen this one at one time or another, but these days one w...

Re: Westerns

This movie is memorable to me in a personal sense. When I bought it, I was staying with friends, due to financial hardship. My friends were nice people, but with an unhealthy lifestyle. So while they were getting wasted and acting like complete idiots upstairs, I was in the basement watching Randolp...

Re: Westerns

I have TALL MAN RIDING on a disc with two other Scott vehicles. No, it's not one of the great westerns. But three movies for ten dollars? Deal!

Re: What recent films have you seen?

Movieman, you and I were separated at birth! I did make it through the first LOTR. Nothing about it inspired a return of this king! I know this is considered sacrilege among fans. I just didn't find it interesting. "But the book is so good!" So was the steak I had for dinner. One doesn't h...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

the two Merle movies I haven't yet seen Didn't know you were a Haggard fan! I might have seen SUSAN SLADE when I was a teenager. At the very least, the plot was similar to the description provided. But I'm sure there are a number of movies that boast that storyline! As for A SUMMER PLACE, just make...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Unless I'm very much mistaken, James Best played the meanest guitar in Mayberry. I don't know if the actor himself played, but the character set the thing on fire!

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

immoral-as-only-the-70s-can-be That is an excellent point! Some movies of that era simply flaunt their wickedness. Not in a clever, plotted Oscar Wilde way; more "We've discarded all sense of decency and aren't we cute!" I suppose it could be argued that this started with THE GRADUATE in ...
