Re: What's Up Doc - a homage to how many?

NICKELODEON (76) is another of Bogdanovich's valentine to the movies. I know it doesn't appeal to most movie-goers and I'll admit
that the story teeters to the brink more than once, but the atmosphere is so right that I always lose myself in the moment while viewing it.

Re: Stan and Ollie

Yes, I knew that you weren't putting down the entire film. I could tell there was a deep and abiding love for Stan & Ollie in that cold and stoney heart of yours..... (This is where I'm suppose to place one of those 'smilie faces' on the page but I just can't in all good conscience). I remember ...

Re: Stan and Ollie

Come on! PHILLIP is hilarious for being a typical Roach silent situation comedy. Ollie plays a stuffy man about town and continually registers various forms of embarrassment over the antics of his nephew. And Stan doesn't just play a kilt-wearing Scotsman, he plays a girl crazy, skirt-chasing Scotsm...

Re: A Face In The Crowd

Thank you, all of you for posting new insights. I am indeed from Europe, good old Blighty in fact and I have more questions  Did Kazan pick Andy Griffiths from nowhere, create a persona for television that the TV networks then picked up on or was he on TV and Kazan gave him an added twist by ...

Re: What's Up Doc - a homage to how many?

Peter Bogdanovich is a student of classic movies as much as anyone on this board and that movie was definitely
his Valentine to movies he loved. There was no attempt to rip off anyone. He even arranged a viewing of it
with Cary Grant to get his opinion on it.

Re: Orson Welles: The Eye of a Poet

That reputation for profligacy stuck with him anyway. That unfounded reputation is perhaps the cruelest myth of all. He directed and wrote TOUCH OF EVIL for free. He was paid only as an actor. Is it a myth? Welles was such a capricious character that he brought most of the harm on his career upon h...

That's one of the best descriptions of Chaney Jr. on film. The guy always comes off so somber, so quiet.....so comatose.

Re: TCM Tribute to Nicholas Ray

I personally have never considered Ray to be a top tiered director. For such a small body of work, he made a lot of undistinguished films ( FLYING LEATHERNECKS , anybody). Their parts seem to be greater than their whole and many give off an arty, B-movie vibe to me ( THEY LIVE BY NIGHT , BORN TO BE ...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

The glass half-empty, half full...I thought of that Gary J. But I didn't want to be mean to Brent. So, what's your answer? Simple. Everyone. For me Brent was just a cipher as a leading man. Maybe I should clarify that a bit. In some of his programmers he made in the mid-thirties, such as FRONT PAGE...

Re: How Green Was My Valley

I didn't know that there were any art houses showing classic films any more.... But RedRiver is right about these two films being paired. Critics have juxtaposed both of these Ford films for decades now because of their similar themes (families) and the fact that they were made within a year of each...
