Re: The Long Good Friday
Eddie was never bad - even if some of his films were questionable. Francesca told me that even though she loves her granddad's movies, she does have a difficult time with his role as Dathan in "The Ten Commandments". Okay, admittedly the potential of Little Caesar does threaten to creep th...

The Long Good Friday
With apologies to Bob Hoskins. Okay, I make the statement: Was there ever a better actor than Edward G. Robinson? Day off work, tuned into TCM . . . and Eddie rules. Just finished watching "The Last Gangster" and once more Eddie proves his mettle. From self-centered, despicable thug to tho...

Re: Elvis westerns
Well, yes, Stuart, but by the time "Tickle Me" was filmed (1965), I think Julia's career was pretty much on the downward slide. A more notable exception, of course, was Miss Stanwyck, who appeared with Elvis in "Roustabout". For the record, I pretty much grw up on the Elvis/Jerry...

Re: Elvis westerns
Re: Elvis and "The Colonel": I really don't think Vernon would have had that much influence over his son when it came to dealing with a sharpie like Tom Parker. In fairness, yes, he did guide Elvis into superstardom but he took almost total control over him when it came to decision making....

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
Another film that fits into that category is the Kirk-Henry starrer "There was a Crooked Man". And cynical, to boot.

Re: Ben Johnson
One hundred and forty three pages for Ben Johnson! Heck, where else could you find that? May I say that I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Mr. Johnson back in the 80s in Arizona, and the man, as you might already expect, was so completely free of pretense that he might just as well have been a di...

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
Interesting point, Mr. Arkadin. I remember getting the same feeling when I saw Jimmy killed off in "Bandolero". Certain actors you just don't expect to see killed off, and, yes, even Dean Martin fit into that mold. Dino's three screen deaths, interestingly enough, all occurred in his favor...

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
Now there you have hit the nail on the head, Mr. Arkadin. Wasn't so nice a guy either in "Firecreek".

Re: Elvis westerns
"Charo" is pretty bad, but I've gotta say I really enjoy "Love Me Tender" (despite Elvis's so-out-of-period hip-swinging). Elvis does display some pretty convincing acting chops and what a terrific supporting cast. How can you go wrong with Neville Brand, Robert Middleton and Wil...

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
You know, I never really considered Fonda a baddie as such in "Fort Apache". Just a military, stick-to-the-book bonehead.

Re: *CANDIDS*
Is it just me or is there a hint of Rowan Atkinson in that picture of Freddie?
Re: Westerns
I have to agree with MissGoddess regarding the color photography. Today's audiences have grown so accustomed to color that it is still a treat to see the way color was used in those earlier films. Rich, luscious.

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
I can't believe I forgot "Monte Walsh". Haunting, lyrical, and most especially notable for an atypical Jack Palance performance. I also agree with the merits of "Shane". One Western I could quite get into is "High Noon". LOVE the scene between Coop and Lon Chaney, Jr. a...

'Nother one just came to mind: "The Tin Star" with ol' Hank, Tony Perkins and Neville Brand.
And darn: "Once Upon A Time in The West".

Re: The Ox Bow Incident
Although I haven't see the film - but will and will definitely weigh in on it, isn't one of the reasons for its classic status the final scene of Ethan Edwards (Wayne) standing in the doorway, elbow in hand, in a pose reminiscent of Harry Carey, a posture he assumed (not in the script) intended as a...
