Re: Which non-Bond spies do you like?

I'd love to see the Matt Helm books come around again. Those things have practically disappeared. I read some as a child. My recollection is that they weren't real good. But I would enjoy another look, for old time's sake. They're American, kind of hard boiled. And don't feature Dean Martin acting l...

Re: THE UNINVITED

I watched this fine, tasteful ghost story when I was about nine years old. On The Late Show! For years, the name Mary Meredith meant CREEPY in our house! Want to see a haunted house movie that respects your intelligence? That goes for psychological thrills rather than visceral? This is the one. Ther...

Re: On Cukor

I don't have much to add to the admirable insight preceeding. (Is anybody buying this?) I will say there are quite a few Cukor films I like. A lot. Several are direct adaptations of plays. Others have a theatrical quality, relying heavily on dialogue. The terrific Phillip Barry comedies, HOLIDAY and...

Re: Frankenstein

If anything, I think "Bride" is the better film. I give credence to the first as the one that opened the door. It's my sentimental favorite. But "Bride" takes the story in a more challenging direction. Like THE GODFATHER so many years later, it's really just one story. The only d...

Hmm...I'm going to have to go back to "Reading Between the Lines" school. I TOTALLY believe he did it!

Re: October 2011 on TCM

SHE (1965)...Granted, I was awfully young. But this movie is REALLY dull! When an eleven year-old boy is bored with Ursula Andress, there's a definite problem! Always good to spend Halloween with William Castle. The very mention of STRAIT JACKET makes me smile. It's one of the director's best. Back ...

I like Tracy in the later years. There wasn't a better ham in movies! I think this is one of his better performances.

I like this movie. Really like Hartman. The abuse suffered by her character is hearbreaking. This is touching story.

Re: October 2011 on TCM

THE SEVENTH VICTIM is a haunting Val Lewton chiller. Sad and poetic. Literally. John Donne is quoted to great effect. THE SET-UP is one of the great no budget noirs. Has confinement and intimacy ever been better used? Your list of lesser known noirs intrigues me. NIGHTFALL is the only one I've seen....

Re: Lawman

I did. It's not a great western. But it's respectable. The story is credible. The actors are good. (Were these two ever NOT good?) It's a simple, every day, decent cowboy movie. And it's taken seriously. There's respect for the material. When the film came out, I thought, Wow! They still make wester...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I got a Dougals Sirk soaper from the library. THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW. Stanwyck, MacMurray (didn't realize they made so many movies together), Joan Bennett and a wasted Jane Darwell. The movie is not bad. It's mature, uncompromising. Almost fatalistic. Not one of the great Sirk melodramas. But I lik...

Re: Do You Have Trouble getting others to watch classics?

I hardly ever try anymore. If I meet somebody who ALREADY likes the classics, we have something to talk about. I make recommendations. So does the other person. I've just about given up "converting." Almost nobody is interested. "Why is this in black and white? What's wrong with the T...

Chio,

HANNIBAL is an Ulmer film? Victor Mature and the elephants? I didn't know that. I'm in exactly the same boat. I saw it at the age of six. Not since.

Miss Goddess,

Nice thoughts on Roy Earle and the people around him. Very insightful. And that dog! What a great character! I'm a big fan of this well written drama.

Re: Superman 2012 ... The Reboot

I like comic book movies, but there are too many of them. I enjoyed Christopher Reeve as Superman. Tim Burton's BATMAN has elements I appreciate. I really liked the Spider-man films of a few years ago. Now there are what? Three of them running concurrently? Good Lord! As a child, I read Thor. Green ...
