Drive-In Theaters

Many of us have fond memories of drive-ins from a time in the past when it seemed almost every community of any size had at least one. In the region around Albany, New York, where I grew up, there were no less then 15 within a reasonable driving time. Today, of course, in some places drive-ins are a...

Re: Summer TV shows

Although most folks are talking about cable shows, I've been enjoying COMBAT HOSPITAL which is a very well done Canadian series that ABC is running this summer. The story is about a Canadian army hospital in Afghanistan. The natural thing is to compare it with M*A*S*H, but it's not a comedy and does...

Re: The Story of Temple Drake

[quote="kingrat"]When TCM showed The Story of Temple Drake at the 2010 festival, it was only 90% restored, according to the expert who presented it, and you could tell the difference. Let's hope that by now there's a fully restored version. When we ran it this past March at Cinefest here i...

Re: What Horror and Sc-Fi films have you seen lately?

Ahh, memories of my misspent youth. I don't recall THE CYCLOPS, but THE GIANT CLAW is one of my favorite cheap sci-fi films from the fifties. I was so glad when it came out on DVD. Great fun even if it does have the goofiest looking monster. I first saw HORROR HOTEL at a drive-in where it was playin...

Re: Titanic

My wife and I took a tour of the Canadian Maritime Provinces, last year and while in Halifax, Nova Scotia we visited the Atlantic Maritime Museum (I think that's the name) which has a permanent Titanic exhibition and features artifacts and other displays. It's well worth seeing. Something about look...

Re: Liars

Well, I'm not trying to take sides here, but there are situations where that does exist. Right here in New York State there are some prisons that have very low inmate populations, but are still fully staffed, so I imagine that those numbers might be true in those cases. The governor is looking to co...

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I didn't search to see if anybody was mentioned this before, but last night I was watching STORMY WEATHER for the umpteeth time and no matter how many times I've watched it I'm always amazed the dancing skill of The Nicholas Brothers. How they can do jumps landing in a split then spring back up and ...

The 1931 Frankenstein looks as if it has escaped the Universal vaults!

I sure hope the rest of the Universal horror inmates make a breakout too.

Re: The Uninvited

Since I asked the question, I guess I should give my opinion too. I think the first time I saw THE UNINVITED was on TV in the 1960s and it really scared me. If I remember correctly, it was on the Late Show one Saturday night and my parents were long in bed so I was watching it alone in a dark house....

Re: The Uninvited

Definitely one of my favorite haunted house films. Probably only second to Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING. The late author of British film books, Leslie Halliwell, mentions the film in his autobiography "Seats In All Parts" as follows: "The national critics had unanimously congratulated t...

Re: HARRY'S LAW

Definitely a winner, in my opinion. Interesting concept and characters. The only thing is I wish it was on one of the cable networks like TNT or USA instead of NBC. The broadcast networks are notorious for not letting shows develop to their full potential, especially when they start in January and t...

Re: The Bells Go Down (1943)

Absolutely, while I've had a region 2 copy for a couple of years, I think most people have never heard of BELLS GO DOWN and would be surprised. I've always liked British films that were made with their own domestic audience in mind and not the foreign market. Another one that wouldn't be seen anywhe...

Re: Wagon Train on the Encore Western Channel

I've been recording them, but so far only watched the first one which guest starred Ernest Borgnine. If they didn't start with the first "set-up" episode, perhaps for the marathon they picked the episodes with best known guest stars.

Re: How's the weather?

I hope Lynn and all our friends in the West are safe and sound and not effected by all the flooding that's happening out there. Here in Upstate New York, we moan and groan about the massive snow falls we get (that just comes with the territory), but unlike those floods, there's usually little damage...

We have good friends in Baltimore. As I recall, last year was your turn for getting hit badly. Wasn't it?
