CoffeeDan Time

It's swell to see you here, CoffeeDan. I was sorry to see the number of your posts diminish over in TCM land. It does my heart good to see you here...

Farley Granger

A pal sent me this report on Monday night's Film Forum tribute to Farley Granger . It was written by Neil Genzlinger , and I'm assuming was featured in today's New York Times . Here are some excerpts : Mr. Granger may not have achieved the film idol fame of contemporaries like James Stewart and Mar...

The Ghost On Dangerous Ground

I bought the cd of the soundtrack to Ghost and Mrs. Muir about six months ago. Wow. It's now one of my all-time favorites. If it'd been vinyl, it would have been well worn by now. I too have my eye out for this film now. I haven't seen it since I was a teenager, and I don't think really it captivate...

Adios

In the Paris flashback of Casablanca, Rick and Ilsa dance to Eddie Woods and Enric Madriguera's hit song Adios. There are many great recordings of this including Glenn Miller's 1941 version and Pérez Prado 1962 twist on the song, featuring the great vocals of Rosemary Clooney.

To continue with your analogy, I believe the architect would be the screenwriter. The producer is the guy who hires the architect and says "I would like a house based on the Arts and Crafts aesthetic but with an Italian Renaissance loggia in front." Then he goes on to hire the contractor, ...

On the Road Again

Thanks for the tempting invite, Lynn! It looks like work is sending me to New York for most of May (though I will be in Anaheim May 23). I might be spending more time at New York's Film Forum than at any west coast theatres! I certainly hope to be back in San Francisco the first week of June, as tha...

The Producers

I can get the answer started. The reason you don't already know is probably because there are so many grey areas to the roles. And there are different producers: Executive Producer, Associate Producer, etc. The role has changed with time, but has always varied to some degree. Some producers are basi...

Stanwyck Question and a Moment of Silents

It's great seeing these events happening around the country. Lynn, what's the Salome Jens connection with Barbara Stanwyck and [presumably] Fritz Lang's Clash by Night ? ~~~~~~~~~~ I've received preliminary word on this summer's Silent Film Festival (July 13-15, San Francisco). So far we know they'l...

Three Cheers for Cheeta!

Last month [on that other Board] I announced the 75th birthday of Cheeta. Yes, Tarzan's Cheeta. Still alive, well and living the retired life in Palm Springs. Today's San Francisco Chronicle had a follow-up to the story: In Palm Springs, 80 well-wishers, including Diane Weissmuller of San Francisco,...

The Gnome Mobile

Travelocity's ad campaign with the travelling gnome popping up all over the world came soon after Amélie 's huge success. I considered it a "rip-off"; though a fun one. Jeunet's aesthetic in La Cité Des Enfants Perdus could be derivative of other gloomy fantasies ( Brazil ?), but it was th...

The Awful Truth

The Awful Truth is not only my favorite Irene Dunne comedy, it's one of my favorite all-time comedies. She is as sparkling as champagne in this romp with Cary Grant. I'm also a fan of Theodora Goes Wild , though it's been years since I've seen it. I really think she was swell. The scope of her role...

First Brennan

Judith said of Walter Brennan:
I was the recipient of a "first" from my peers, and I hold a record in that regard that has yet to be broken.
What was the "first"? Was it the first Best Supporting Oscar? And that he won three times?
