Re: Susannah York RIP
I feel this passing. I first saw Susannah York the ingenue in theatrical re-releases of Tom Jones and A Man For All Seasons , and she remains my favorite Jane Eyre (1970). The way she kneels beside George C. Scott's knee, expecting judgment but defying it, submissive yet rebellious, needing affectio...

Re: True Grit -- the Remake
The new version is a legitimate adaptation of the novel and a fine film in many ways. As a western, it is most welcome (a new western is always welcome). I'm disappointed that important aspects of the novel are left out, and I'm uncomfortable with the new material the Coens put in. The new stuff mis...

Arnold was sort of interesting too since he used to take exploitation movies with prosaic scripts and found a way to give them an ap...

Oh, I liked Gun the Man Down well enough.
A reasonably original B western and a solid directorial debut for MacLaglen.

Re: Arizona's Little Hollywood -- highly recommended
Enjoyed your website. I used to subscribe to Arizona Highways . Thanks, but I have that issue with Ben Johnson. Also have the issue devoted to the film Junior Bonner, and a couple of issues devoted to John Wayne. I was once interviewed and quoted in the magazine regarding an historical matter. The h...

Re: Arizona's Little Hollywood -- highly recommended
Personally, I hate what the developers have done to Sedona. When Kenny Rodgers burned down the western town set on Bradshaw's ranch for one of his The Gambler TV-movies, that was the last straw. One can't really get a wide-angle vista shot for a period western anymore. Too many intrusions. Everytime...

Re: Least Favorite Ford Western
There is no such thing as a "bad" John Ford western. Ford was first and foremost a dramatist, and sometimes he applied the frontier conditions and trappings of the western to the drama he was telling. Stagecoach is drama first, and a western second, but it excels at both. The Horse Soldier...

Gunsmoke or Bonanza...discuss Neither. I never could get into either program. Gunsmoke , Wagon Train , The Virginian , The Big Valley , Lancer , right up to Little House On the Prairie and Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman , I can't relate to horse operas. Wanted: Dead Or Alive , Have Gun Will Trave l, and ...

Re: Least Favorite Ford Western
All of John Ford's westerns are my favorite. But my most favorite is whichever one I'm watching at the moment. Stagecoach is an inspiration and a favorite and brilliant cinema. I suppose Cheyenne Autumn is fatally flawed because of mis-informed history and the annoying comedy interlude involving Wya...

Roy Rogers in TruColor and Uncut
I thought it would be nice to watch Roy Roger's color western musicals. I dislike singing cowboys as a rule, but Roy Rogers always cheered me up, and his films were short enough at roughly 60 minutes to not overstay their welcome. Also, he could sing, whereas the other guy couldn't, and he had the S...

Greetings to the forum
I saw a reference made to Silver Screen Oasis on The Blackboard, a noir forum that I visit occasionally.
I browsed the folders and was favorably impressed by the intelligent discourse here.
So, hello.
