One of my favorite musical westerns is RIDE 'EM COWBOY. Great score including "Give Me My Saddle", "Wake Up Jacob", "A-Tisket A-Tasket" sung by Ella Fitzgerald and the incredible "I'll Remember April" beautifully sung by Dick Foran and chorus. Originally recor...

Ray--is there any chance that The Searchers original soundtrack will ever get released on cd? Screen Archives and BYU released THE SEARCHERS several years ago. In fact, it was their first soundtrack release. It was after that project that I joined the team. THE SEARCHERS has been out of print for q...

Thankfully the most recent DVD is complete and all 35mm. For many years, the only print available was the Astor Pictures 87 minute reissue. Then a VHS restoration was done where footage was inserted from a 16mm print. Unfortunately they filtered the soundtrack so severely that you couldn't understan...

Thanks Moraldo. I don't imagine that JEZEBEL would happen in the near future. We have FIGHTER SQUADRON waiting in the wings and then hopefully some 50's scores such as SO BIG and perhaps a westerns album. But there's quite a bit of JEZEBEL that survives so it is definitely on the list of candidates.

Max Steiner's THE LETTER soundtrack now on CD

Just a quick note to let you know that the BYU / Chelsea Rialto Studios / Screen Archives production of Max Steiner's THE LETTER is now available through Screen Archives Entertainment. This exotic, evocative score is presented in comprehensive fashion, nearly complete, and is produced using composer...

This is one of several Tracy-Hepburns I own in 16mm. Not only do I like this film for what it is, I am astounded that it was made - and released - when it was. The type of shattering-the-feet-of-clay drama that this film represents was 20 years ahead of its time. More to the point, we were at war an...

This is probably my favorite tear-jerker. Not that it's the best by any stretch; but it just has so many things that I love about it. First and foremost is Max Steiner's score. It is an incredible tapestry of themes and motifs, knitted together as only Maxie could do. There is a very unique choir ch...

Oh, Golly, LOVE AFFAIR takes the prize hands down. It is so simple and honest; and beautifully written and scored, both with a light hand. AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER is much more of a soap opera (though I do love Friedhofer's score and his use of the Harry Warren title tune). Also, Maria Ouspenskaya adds...

Well, Moira, I certainly appreciate the kudos. I've been doing soundtrack restoration for quite a few years now. If you go to my website you can listen to many excerpts from various scores. There's also a link to my Max Steiner Pages - a work-in-progress. The music to THE RAZOR'S EDGE is quite sensa...

Like its predecessor RED RIVER, this film was heavily cut for general release and subsequent reissue. Last time I saw THE BIG SKY on TCM they had a hybrid print with the cut scenes inserted from a 16mm print. This is one of those cases where they made 16mm prints for military release before the film...

Unfortunately, when most people see MAD WORLD today they are seeing an erzatz restored version that is 30 minutes longer than the general release version. All the restored footage was from discarded trims and alternate takes and much of it was purposefully cut by the director to tighten the film. Th...

I would definitely recommend Frank Capra's RIDING HIGH. Crosby gives one of his best and most natural performances and at least one of the songs is recorded live on the set - as opposed to being pre-recorded. It's also one of the few times when, IMHO, the remake is superior to the original (BROADWAY...

People often talk about the number of films that Hitchcock had scored by Bernard Herrmann.

Some day take a look at Michael Curtiz' credits. Then look at Max Steiner's credits. Big films and little films, they were a great team for nearly 20 years.
