Re: CANDIDS II

One of the more tragic Hollywood stories. Jan-Michael Vincent seemed to show up nearly every other week in a movie during the 70s (usually drive-in fare but entertaining nonetheless). I especially remember him from the tearjerker BUSTER AND BILLIE. Once again, a career catapulted into oblivion due t...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

Erik, hope you give THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US a watch and share your thoughts. Interesting film. As a young'un it rather disappointed me but today it's by far my favorite of the series since it has a somewhat different subplot. Overall, I think most Gillman fans consider it the lesser of the trio ...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

THE AVENGERS star Patrick Macnee has left us. Another face more familiar to TV viewers than movie watchers, though he did gain fame as the young Marley in the quintessential version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL . And a friend and contemporary of Christopher Lee -- RIP, John Steed: http://www.empireonline.c...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

. . . And more sad news for movie buffs. George "Foghorn" Winslow. The little kid with the big voice.

RIP.

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Dick Van Patten has passed on. More a TV than movie fixture, but always a welcome presence.

RIP

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Bronxie, I remember when THE MANITOU was released, Tony Curtis appeared to promote the movie on - I believe - it was The Mike Douglas Show, and he seemed to appear a leetle bit uncomfortable talking about his participation in the pic, almost cringing to say something positive along the lines that if...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

I completely agree, R.R. I own the DVD (part of the Universal Sci-Fi Collection) and watch CULT OF THE COBRA often. Definitely a fun movie - sorta like an early disaster film: Which one of those future TV stars is going to get it next . . . and how?

R.R. I agree. But don't overlook COOL HAND LUKE.

Or else what we got here's a failure to communicate . . .

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Well, Moira, if one was suffering from insomnia THE SWARM was a pretty effective sleep-inducer. Saw the movie (with great anticipation) during its initial theatrical run - having read the Herzog novel, excited by the cast, and up to that point Irwin Allen's disaster movies hadn't yet struck out. Ter...

Re: George Raft

One more interesting tidbit, albeit behind the scenes during the filming of SOULS AT SEA. Raft was questioned by the FBI in connection with the whereabouts of Murder Incorporated chief Louis Lepke, who at the time was in hiding. Raft claimed to have no knowledge other than having a slight acquaintan...

Re: George Raft

Well . . . when the topic of George comes up, I add my two cents -- or whatever they're worth. Moira, George's career was in high swing when he was offered the role of Powdah in SOULS AT SEA. And he'd already gained a reputation as a role-turn-downer at the studio, eventually achieving a record of 2...

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Yes, that was exactly my first double feature exposure to the Cushing and Lee team-up - with the added attraction some lousy movie called THE WITCH'S CURSE (shoulda been either CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF or THE MUMMY). But regardless, watching those two horror heroes on the big screen remains a vivid and...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Bronxie, TROG is fun (heck, the second paring of a not-too-sober Joan and Michael Gough) but THE MANITOU fails in its potential with that goofy STAR WARS-wannabe wrap-up that seems as far out of left field as Tony Curtis appearing in the movie in the first place.
