Re: Trailer for The Patriot (Ernst Lubitsch, 1928)
Well, my understanding is that Paramount was among the very worst studios at preserving their silents, so there are missing Lubitsch's, Wellman's, De Mille's, von Sternberg's, not to mention a bunch of Clara Bow films. I realize every studio was neglectful, but Paramount by all accounts was among th...

Intolerance (D.W. Griffith, 1916)
I rewatched Intolerance yesterday, and it reconfirmed the things that frustrated me on my first viewing. First though, the positives: 1. The scope of the Babylonian sequences is remarkable, those sets are awe-inspiring. 2. The contemporary story is a heck of a melodrama, and would work very well as ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
It wasn't that Underworld didn't have it's strengths, I simply found it more fascinating for it's historical influence than as a film. Here's what I've been watching the past week: Different From The Others - Fascinating slice of edutainment, clearly designed as a message/exploitation picture, but m...

Re: The Life Story of David Lloyd George (Elvey, 1918)
Well I encourage both of you to order it. Keep in mind the shipping costs for that site are pretty ridiculous unless you live in the U.K. Christine, I have heard good things about Hindle Wakes, and I will definitely check it out soon. phil noir, remarkably enough the film was completed before the en...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Aside from the stunning The Life Story of David Lloyd George which I wrote about in another post, here's what I managed to watch this week: Underworld - Thanks to Jeffrey, I finally found copy in English. I'd been wanting to see this one for a while now, as I am very fond of von Sternberg, and the G...

The Life Story of David Lloyd George (Elvey, 1918)
Thanks to a British friend who ordered me a copy to save on shipping, I purchased this DVD from the Welsh Film Archive . A little backstory about the film's history from the Welsh Film Archive: Maurice Elvey's silent biopic maps out the life of British Prime Minister Lloyd George from childhood to t...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Moraldo, I'm envious of you getting to see The Crowd on the big screen. It's my favorite silent film, and a strong contender for my favorite film in general. Over the weekend I watched a few more silents: The Poor Little Rich Girl - My second Mary Pickford film was very enjoyable. Perhaps a little s...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Well I feel silly.
I was wondering why Pickford seemed to get so little screentime.
Still didn't like the story that much, but I'll have to check it out again, knowing Pickford is playing a dual role.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
Miriam Hopkins is among faves. I haven't seen much of work post-1934 save for her incredible performance in 1951's The Mating Season , and in The Heiress , though I must confess I didn't know who she was when I watched it. As for me, well more silents this week: Stella Maris - well this was my first...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
feaito, I'm a big fan of When Ladies Meet too. I think it's one of Myrna's best performances. Ooh, and The Animal Kingdom is great too. charliechaplinfan, I haven't seen any Asian silents save for I Was Born, But... which really impressed me. I hope to delve into some more Ozu and Mizoguchi silents,...

It's also my understanding that the DVD's are in fact DVD-R's, ala the Lost RKO set put out by TCM.
Oh and When Ladies Meet is the 1941 version.

The Warner Archive
http://www.wbshop.com/Warner-Archive/ARCHIVE,default,sc.html 150 titles with many more promised. Alas they are $20, and only are available in the US. But still this is a gleam of hope for the future. I mean The Beast of The City on DVD is something I've been waiting for awhile now, plus there's som...
