Re: Man in the Saddle (1951)
Yes, interesting to see Joan Leslie playing a character quite different from her usual roles. She loves Randolph Scott but marries Alexander Knox for his money. Ellen Drew is so beautiful in this and John Russell is very good too.

Re: The Rains Came
I haven't seen The Rains Came for many years but I still remember how very impressed I was by Myrna Loy's performance. She conveyed such a wealth of emotion with quiet power , as her love for Tyrone Power becomes selfless.

Re: YOU Tube'n
Missgoddess,I've just seen JIGSAW for the first time and am afraid I only spotted Burgess Meredith.
Maybe I wasn't concentrating, but the relationship of Franchot Tone and Doe Avedon(Betty Harper) confused me. At first I thought they were brother and sister!

Re: Flight of The Phoenix
I always enjoy this film. The relationship between the officious Peter Finch and his subordinate, Ronald Fraser is well played.
I agree it was a nice change of pace for Dan Duryea.

Re: SMOKE SIGNAL
I saw Smoke Signal for the first time this week. As you say, an original setting on the Colorado river, but a lot of back projection spoiled sections of the film. I liked William Talman as the army officer intent on taking Dana Andrews to justice.

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
DOUBLE CROSS, a fast paced little thriller made in 1941 by PRC and starring Kane Richmond,Wynne Gibson,John Miljan and Pauline Moore. Miljan is always a smooth baddie but I didn't know Wynne Gibson who was good as Miljan's girlfriend who ends up being bumped off by him in a scene which is extremely ...

I only know Susan from IMITATION OF LIFE and THE LAST WAGON - a fine actress. A shame she had a short career.

I watched Inner Sanctum on Archive.org and found it enjoyable, with a hint of the supernatural and a good ending.

I just never took to Fred MacMurray, don't know why,BUT he is so,so good in DOUBLE INDEMNITY. I'm not saying no one else could have played the part, but I doubt anyone could have been better.

Re: Caught (1949) - James Mason, Robert Ryan AND Max Ophuls!
My memory of Caught is that Barbara Bel Geddes was miscast - would have thought Jane Greer or Lauren Bacall or Gene Tierney's would have been better and more believable as a female who would tempt the man who has everything.
I also thought Ryan's character was a bit one-dimensional .

Re: Call Northside 777 (1947)
I love this film and the climax at the end with the blow-up of the newspaper date. What a performance from Kasia Orzazewski in that scene on the stairs with Stewart near the beginning. So real. Unusual to see Richard Conte in a passive role but of course he did it well. As for Bette Garde, I just lo...

Re: Where The Sidewalk Ends
I agree with Moirai that Gene Tierney's character is too forgiving ,considering what Dana Andrews puts her father through. The other big disappointment for me is how little Gene has to do - a much smaller role than Laura. But a great part for Dana. And I liked Gary Merrill, always clearing his sinuse...

Re: 99 River Street (1953)
I love 99 RIVER STREET and watch it often. One of John Payne's best performances .Only disappointment for me is Evelyn Keyes. Would have preferred Ella Raines or Gloria Grahame . What a striking scene in the theatre early on. So unexpected. In contrast, I've just watched Payne in THE SAXON CHARM and...

Nice to see Brian Donlevy in a sympathetic role and to see Helen Walker as the femme fatale, so unlike her loving wife portrayal in CALL NORTHSIDE 777. Ella Raines always good. Not so sure about Charles Coburn's Irish accent!

Re: The Long Memory
Nice to be reminded of this fine thriller, well written and cast. Good part for John Mills. I could see it easily translate to an American noir setting.I like Geoffrey Keen as the persistent journalist.
