Gagman wrote: THE LITTLE PRINCESS, and THE HOODLUM, are also expected to be offered on official DvD for the first time. A Little Princess was available as a special feature on the Milestone release of the documentary on Frances Marion, Without Lying Down . Not sure if there is a difference with the...

I discovered this myself a few days ago. It's not as full as you might then it would be (many stars only have a half-dozen or so photos). The real gem are the candid photos taken in the 1970's-1990's (I don't think any photos are post 2000) which reveal many a star is not quite as gorgeous as we mig...

Thanks for the further recommendations!!! I also recommend the vintage James Robert Parish books: Paramount Pretties The RKO Gals The Fox Girls Parish was often very harsh with his comments about the various films, it almost made you wonder if he liked old movies at all. And you certainly can tell ...

Is it just me but I really dislike this trend of boxed sets with no real ties other than maybe being from the same era. You might as well boxed together any old four or five movies. And it's highly plausible several titles won't appeal to you at all. I prefer boxed sets to be tied to a star or a dir...

It's only the "Hollywood" episodes of Lucy that run together like a multi-episode thing, the overwhelmingly majority of ILL episodes are single story episodes like most sitcoms - but I LOVE LUCY is still the funniest sitcom of all time in the opinon of many even after some 50+ years. If yo...

Where Leisen gets his main rap is that he wasn't a screenwriter (few directors were then) so extreme fans (both in the general public and among historians) of Billy Wilder (writer of MIDNIGHT) and Preston Sturges (writer of EASY LIVING) love to trash him as if he made messes out of those two classic...

if Billie Burke hadn't been available Norma Shearer could have played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz. Ha, yes I definitely can see her in the part! Maybe they asked her and she turned it down. And I can see the Queen of MGM having a stroke if anyone would have suggested she play a small part in any mov...

I watched a trio of Claudette Colbert pre-code rarities, the best being MANSLAUGHTER (1930) with Fredric March. YOUNG MAN OF MANHATTANA(193) with her then husband Norman Foster and Ginger Rogers was pretty good. I didn't care for THE HOLE IN THE WALL (1929) with Edward G. Robinson which was had a ve...

I far prefer the 1937 original - the remake is essentially "The Judy Garland Show", you have to really be into her to love it whereas the original is a more collabarative effort with better roles for the supporting cast, a more opened up story, etc. I also think Gaynor and March are better...

I wonder if one of the weaknesses of the 1st two A Star Is Born films is the downfall of Norman Main. It wasn't as if Norma was broke when his career finished, he could have sat back and enjoyed his wife's success. in the scene when he was called Mr. Lester, was it really such a big deal. (though t...

Mitchell Leisen is criminially underrated. I think he was a great director but he gets treated as if he were a hack by some historians. I discovered this movie several years ago when I checked out the Universal VHS from my local library. It was the first time I really liked Jean Arthur (who I've sin...

MADE FOR EACH OTHER is a dollar store staple like MY FAVORITE BRUNETTE, TIL CLOUDS ROLL BY, STAGE DOOR CANTEEN, etc. You shoudl be able to pick it up easily and cheaply locally. I think Carole Lombard may hold the record for most major films in public domain by a star of her era - MADE FOR EACH OTHE...

I watched ROMANCE OF THE REDWOODS and I have the say this is the worst film I have ever seen Mary Pickford in. It was very boring and a very unappealing plot ( Mary falling in love with a thief who essentially is her capturor). I just got the Charley Bowers DVD set so I'm watching a few of those sho...

Definately prefer RED HEADED WOMAN which I think is unrivalled as a pre-code comedy. I am a huge Stanwyck fan but have never gotten into BABY FACE, the fact that the naturally beautiful Barbara is at her least attractive all painted up like a sound Barbara La Marr doesn't help. I also like the malig...

Totally love THE GARDEN OF EDEN - definately in my top five list of favorite silent movies.

Sadly, Flicker Alley has reportedly discontinued production of the DVD. If you don't have it better get it soon as prices will likely go through the roof for copies within the year.
