Just for Fun

I was watching the Merry Widow the other night and was surprised to recognize one of the scenes. I collect cigarette cards from the 30's and the Gallaher card for Widow is the scene where Chevalier pinches Jeanette MacDonald's cheek. So anyway, I went through my cards and found a number of them that...

Anne, Beda made that avatar for me, and it actually is Olivia DeHaviland. The really REALLY weird thing is....I used to look like that photo! Now, of course, man had just discovered fire, and the dinosaurs were just headed over the hill, but I really did look like her (in that photo). And...

Four Fabulous Faces

Just got a copy of this book. Wow. It's HUGE! Lots of gorgeous pictures and information on the evolution of those faces, especially Joan Crawford's. I still don't undertsnad the gigantic caterpillar eyebrows she affected in her later years.

[quote="stuart.uk"] Joanna Whalley also played the role in the sequel Scarlett with Timothy Dalton.

Which was a travesty. Scarlett, I mean, both the book and movie. Talk about completely gratuitous sequels...

Katharine Hepburn was always good with kids in movies, when she had any around, that is. Her scenes with Gaetano Autiero as the pint-sized con artist in Summertime are some of my favorites in this movie. She's also very comfortable with Virginia Wiedler in Philadelphia Story.

I've found this thread fascinating. I have somehow managed to miss BOAN every time it's been aired, but I've read about it and seen production stills. And from what I've seen and read, it was, like a lot of Hollywood films, pretty racist. The main difference I see is that many Hollywood films played...

Took my son to see the new Indy yesterday. It was good. Not great, but very much in keeping with the overall tone of the series. There were the usual over-the-top fight scenes (Shia LeBoeuf's character takes over this role to a certain degree) snappy dialogue and mystic archaeology. Indy and others ...

jdb-- That's the episode I was talking about! You had to be an adult to get that line. So subtle. At 9 or 10 I could sit and watch these shows with my parents and it went right over my head. Not like modern sitcoms--we never watched prime time TV in our house until the kids were old enough to unders...

My youngest son is 17, and he is always exclaiming that his generation is stupid, compared to mine. Of course I agree! I always tell my daughter: Not stupid, just ignorant. At least ignorance can be cured. There's a fine line though, at some point ignorance can dig at the root of intelligence and d...

Something that stands out to me is the different levels of humor in older sitcoms. When I was a kid, I remember watching and enjoying The Mary Tyler Moore show. Then years later, I caught an episode on Nick at Night and was shocked to discover that Mary Richards SLEPT WITH MEN!!! Totally missed that...

I finally sat through Long Day's Journey Into Night. First let me say the cast was terrific. On the other hand, what a miserable family. It seemed half of the movie they were busy beating each other up and the other half apologizing for what they just said. There is really no one to like in this fi...

"The Lost Boys" has a lot of humor in it as does "Sean of the Dead." I think they both qualify as horror movies too. (Lost Boys has several gory vampire attacks and Sean is forced to shoot his own mother when she becomes a zombie)

Serah Jane investigates. this stars Elizabeth Sladen as journalist Serah Jane Smith, who was the Doc's assistant when he was Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker in the 70s and she along with robot dog K9 and teenage children save the world every week. she's in great nick for 58. My husband and son got me hooked on this show. I love Tapping's character--beautiful, brilliant, tough. If she was a little better in the personal relationships area, she'd be a perfect role model.
