Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Hello Everyone, Do you like The Man Who Knew too Much (1934) or The Man Who Knew too Much (1956) better? I think both of them are great films. But I like 1934 version better, because of Peter Lorre. I like Lorre better than the villain in 1956 version. I also want to point out that one person didn't...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

I wanted to point out one thing about The Lady Vanishes. The Lady Vanishes is a perfect example of a perfect casting. After that, I consider Rope as the second best.

Re: Preston Sturges

I heard that Preston Sturges had difficulty working with Henry Fonda in The Lady Eve. When Sturges worked with McCrea in Sullivan's Travels, Sturges loved working with McCrea. Sturges casted McCrea again in The Palm Beach Story and The Great Moment (which has been cut against wishes of Sturges).

Re: Preston Sturges

First half hour is a bit slow. The interesting part of the film starts with Rex Harrison conducting the music in front of the audience. When you watch the film second time, you realize why the first half was slow. This is because Sturges wanted the audience to focus on the certain details in the fil...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

SPOILERS (Under Capricorn) I consider Under Capricorn as one of the finest films ever made. French critics and other European Critics consider Under Capricorn as one of the best films from Hitchcock. Many people think Under Capricorn copied a lot from Rebecca. But what they don't realize is Helen Si...

Re: Preston Sturges

Although I am not much into Preston Sturges, still I highly enjoyed his film "Unfaithfully yours." I think it is his best film. But this is just my opinion.

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Compared to his later films, I think Hitchcock was able to experiment a lot from 1925 to 1950. But after Stage Fright, he had limited freedom in even in the thriller genre. Upto Notorious, Hitchcock had success both critically and commercially. After that, his films were severely criticized and his ...

You are right. The Lady Vanishes also takes place in European region where Italian and German are understood.

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Jack Favell, I know there was a year long delay in releasing The Lady Vanishes. The Lady Vanishes was finished long before it was released. After Lady Vanishes was finished, Hitchcock went to America. He stayed in America for ten days. This was in August 1937. At that time, Selznick wanted Hitchcock...

Re: Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger films

I also think that it was great idea to shoot "I know where I'm going" in Black and White. I also like the fact there is a phone booth right next to a water fall. Another nice touch in the film is 60 years of happied married life of the old man and old woman. It increases the impact of the ...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

I enjoy The Lady Vanishes much more than North by Northwest. Compared to The 39 steps and Saboteur, I agree that it has a lighter touch. But I think "serious subject" in The Lady Vanishes would have been much more predictable if it had a serious touch like we see in The 39 steps and Sabote...

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

I haven't seen So Long at the Fair. So I checked the wikipedia link of So Long at Fair.

You are correct. It also got the inspiration from 1880s incident.

Re: ALFRED HITCHCOCK

I agree that Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne are great. I also liked the pairing of Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. The story of Lady Vanishes is inspired by that legend of an Englishwoman who went with her daughter to the Palace Hotel in Paris in the 1880's, at the time of the Great Exposit...

Re: Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger films

Kingme,
I am glad you enjoyed the film. I also love how they shot storm scenes in this film. It is absolutely brilliant. I totally agree with you about the meaning of love that has been expressed through this film.
