Re: Raoul Walsh

Jack, I really like your latest post about Walsh's heroes. In fact, I have enjoyed this thread a lot. For a different slant on Walsh, you might like this piece I wrote some years ago about one of his lesser-known films. Before the Museum of Modern Art’s 1975 retrospective of his work, Raoul Walsh’s ...

Re: Ida Lupino

Theresa, Jack is right! Many years ago, I thought you needed to be educated about the great directors, but it soon became clear to me that you can see a film more clearly than almost anyone else. You don't need no education! Jack, excellent introduction to Walsh. SueSue, thanks for the compliment. S...

Re: Ida Lupino

Theresa, Moira, I want to share with you and the gang a story about the important part played in my early cinematic life by Ida Lupino and Jean Negulesco. Road House was the first time I was aware of movie story-telling, without dialogue or titles. When she is about to sing for the first time, she p...

Re: Vittorio Gassman

Alison, do leave a comment on Brian's site, telling him how much you liked his article. It would mean a lot, especially from one not from New York.

Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

Moira, I agree with what you say about Andrew Sarris, but for me he is far beyond Kael and Agee. They were both excellent writers with fine minds, but each in his own way gave the impression of slumming. Sarris' knowledge and love of movies has not been matched, though many aspire, usually inspired ...

Re: Vittorio Gassman

Yes, Theresa, there are things that Brian does right!

By the way, you and the rest of the gang can call me Bob.

Just saw Bunny Lake again. The roles that Lynley and Dullea were born for!

Re: Vittorio Gassman

Glad you liked our friend Brian's work, ccf, (or may I say Alison?). The Glass Wall is a movie I have wanted to see again for more years than I would say. Some images stayed in my mind for a long time. Yes, there is more than a little nostalgia in seeing those screen grabs and, no doubt, the film it...

Re: Vittorio Gassman

Hello, charliechaplin fan. Just joined the site and one of the first things that struck me was your excellent introduction to Vittorio Gassman, a fine actor and extremely handsome. Also interesting was the discussion of The Glass Wall which, by a coincidence, is the topic of a recent post on the blo...

Re: FRANK BORZAGE

Thank you, Kingrat. I'm glad to be here. I already know a few of you and am eager to get to know you all. I will certainly have plenty to say about Borzage, among others. In the meantime, let me invite you, and all who are interested in Frank, to take a look at: http://mubi.com/lists/frank-borzage-s...

Re: FRANK BORZAGE

I am so happy to see so much interest in and appreciation of Frank Borzage. He is for me one of the handful of truly great filmmakers. While writing about him on Mubi, I had the pleasure of seeing all but a few of his silent films in chronological order, culminating in his last four silent masterpie...

I don't know who Maven has in mind for a co-host, but I would love to see her up there!
