Re: A Tribute to Sidney Lumet, April 21, 2011

Christy, sorry you missed the Private Screenings, and I didn't record it. Here are some more bits that come to mind. Lumet send Ingrid Bergman the script for Murder on the Orient Express because he wanted her to play the Princess Dragomiroff (Wendy Hiller), but Ingrid wanted to play the nanny. Lumet...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

I'm eagerly anticipating Susan Slade tonight. Moira has recommended this as a classic Bad Movie. Troy Donahue and Connie Stevens. Lots of teen angst. Sunday at 6:30 a.m. EDT (3:30 a.m. PDT) offers The Silver Chalice . This Biblical epic stars a young and handsome Paul Newman who, at this point in hi...

Re: A Tribute to Sidney Lumet, April 21, 2011

The Private Screenings with Sidney Lumet was excellent. RO interviewed him after Lumet won his honorary Oscar in 2005. Lumet seemed to have a good perspective on his work, proud of his accomplishments but never arrogant, with many kind words for the actors and other collaborators. I wish it could ha...

Re: Whaaatt?! No Ten Commandments This Year?!

I have a vivid recollection of throwing up during The Ten Commandments when I was a child. My mother and the people around us probably remembered that, too.

Maybe I should claim to have been not only a movie fan, but a movie critic, from a tender age.

Re: A Tribute to Sidney Lumet, April 21, 2011

Wanted to bump the thread to remind everyone that the Lumet tribute is tonight. If you record The Hill , check out the opening of the film. There must be several elaborate camera movements, but they are so smoothly joined it looks like one. Before we've met the characters, we're shown exactly what g...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Thanks for the info about the alternative cast. Do you suppose Jack Warner ever said, "Yeah, we couldn't get Clark Gable so we went with Karl Malden instead"? Maybe they could have done an international version, too, with Alain Delon in the Troy Donahue role, Brigitte Bardot instead of Con...

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Moira, thanks for the hilarious review of one of my guilty pleasures. Sharon Hugueny also plays the beatnik chick in The Caretakers , another movie with credentials for this category. Judd Raike--you don't suppose someone had seen James Dean as Jet Rink in Giant , do you? I love the scene where Clau...

Re: *CANDIDS*

I want to second JF on the Michael Sarrazin photos. Although that black lab steals does steal the scene! I also really liked him in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

Re: Ray Milland, April 2011 Star of the Month

John Wayne didn't sink the first boat deliberately, but then went over to the dark side and deliberately sank the Southern Cross, the new steamboat. RO pointed out that both Paulette Goddard and Susan Hayward had tested for Scarlett. Paulette was one of the finalists. Another GWTW connection: didn't...

Re: *CANDIDS*

Like Moira, I enjoyed seeing a photo of Irving Rapper. There's some biographical information about him in William Mann's Behind the Screen.

Nice Brando/Garland photo, too.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I saw a most unusual picture called Ever in My Heart (1933), with Barbara Stanwyck, Otto Kruger and Ralph Bellamy. In the pre-WWI era Stanwyck awaits the return of her cousin (Bellamy) from college in Germany. Their families expect them to marry, but Bellamy brings home his German friend (Otto Kruge...

Re: Ray Milland, April 2011 Star of the Month

Tuesday night may be the very best of the evenings devoted to Ray Milland. First up is Kitty (1945), which Vecchiolarry tells us was Paulette Goddard's favorite among her films. It's Pygmalion meets Forever Amber, and Paulette is a delight as the guttersnipe who becomes a lady. With Ray Milland, a g...

Re: All My Children, One Life to Live Cancelled.

JF, those are all good memories. As soap watchers know, there were always strong women to be found, when they weren't caught up in roll-your-eyes plots. But then some of those were fun, too. One Life to Life made a point of including Jewish, Eastern European, and African-American characters, and lat...

Re: All My Children, One Life to Live Cancelled.

Lynn, I'm with you all the way on this one. The cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Life is a disaster for actors, especially for those based in New York. This was a training ground for young actors. Writers, directors, producers, and technical crew also will be losing job opportunities....
