Re: Pork Chop Hill

As much as I recognize the sadness and the frustration of this movie, I just can't appreciate it as cinema. Yes, meaninglessness figures directly into the plot. But that backfires in the telling of the story. They talk about this. They talk about that. They're powerless to change it. And so am I! So...

Re: Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (1969)

My mom took us to see MYSTERIOUS ISLAND upon its release. Giant bees! Dude! Eight years later, I was a teenager. In the age of Bonnie and Clyde, Butch and Sundance and (Gasp!) HIGH SCHOOL, "Underwater City" didn't sound like much. But you're right, Moira. These silly things can be harmless...

Giant bugs speak pretty much the same language the world over. Regional accents vary. You can always spot the ones from Boston. But, for the most part, it's universal.

Re: INHERIT THE WIND

I can believe Spence didn't rehearse much. More than most actors, he looked as if he were saying and doing it for the first time. Not following a script. I bet there was a lot of improv going on. Yes, INHERIT THE WIND chooses sides immediately and with conviction. That must be infuriating to those w...

Re: Hemingway on Film

I didn't know his reputation had suffered. I thought I was the only one who didn't care for him. I remember when he died. I didn't know who he was. Didn't know much about suicide. But I heard the news.

Re: Ruthless (1948)

If there's anybody LESS like a lumberjack than the Monty Python gang, it's George Sanders! "Transparent Man" sounds like a blast! There's a Lon Chaney, Jr film I like called THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN. It's not as bad as it sounds. I picked it up at a truck stop!

Re: The Damned Don't Cry (1950)

I came across this movie in a one horse town in Kentucky. Literally. The horse was tied up outside the store! A rack of five dollar videos. Teen comedies. Car movies. Zombies who rip your head off. And out of nowhere, JOAN! I like this "minor" Crawford film. It's not MILDRED PIERCE. Not QU...

Re: INHERIT THE WIND

If pressed to name THE BEST ACTOR in movies, it would be hard beat Spencer Tracy. He simply delved deeper, came up with more, than almost anybody else. Consistently. His work in GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, THE LAST HURRAH and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is inspired. Likewise WOMAN OF THE YEAR, PAT AND M...

Re: Celia Johnson, a great Dame

This is like falling in love with somebody you hardly know. I may have seen Ms. Johnson in three movies. But she's so good I can't take my eyes off her. She climbs inside a characer and brings it to life, the way only the very best actors do. THIS HAPPY BREED, IN WHICH WE SERVE, BRIEF ENCOUNTER. Tha...

THE VOICE! That's the first thing I think of when I think of Mason. Can you do a British accent without doing Mason? I've known people who can't do impressions at all. (They think they can, but they can't!) But they all nail Mason! This wonderful, sophisticated man brings credibility to fantasy (JOU...

Re: Shepherd Of The Hills

There's much to like about this movie. It's thoughtful, beautifully shot, and different. An unusual role for John Wayne, an actor who, even in relative youth, didn't shy away from them. A story of strong people in rugged country. When I think of the great outdoor movies, this film doesn't immediatel...

Re: 1939's Of Mice and Men

Love this movie. Love this book. Chaney is not my favorite actor. But he's so good in this it's remarkable. (In fact, I seem to be remarking on it!) Everybody is good in it. At least good enough to serve the story and not be a distraction. I recently watched the movie after not seeing it for many ye...
