Re: I Just Watched...
Too bad that Cane River isn't on demand, so people could at least give it a try. I don't want to oversell it, but I'm glad I saw it. By the way, it has better sound recording than the Oscar-winning Moonlight.

Re: I Just Watched...
One of the moments I liked best in Cane River was when the girl was accusing the guy's family of not being black enough, and he told her that when he was growing up, whenever someone black appeared on TV, whoever was watching would call out "Colored!" and everyone else would run to see them.

Re: I Just Watched...
Did anyone else see Cane River (1982) last night? This unusual indy film was shot in Louisiana (Cane River, Natchitoches, New Orleans) and specifically deals with characters and situations from that area. The director, Horace B. Jenkins, had completed the film and was looking for a distribution deal...

Not film related, but I had a classmate known as Squeaky Manley. He had a high-pitched voice, thus the nickname Squeaky.

We are watching For All Mankind and are almost through the second season. I believe the fourth season is currently airing. The first two seasons In this alternative timeline, in which the Russians reach the moon first, have taken us through the administrations of Nixon, Teddy Kennedy (alternative ti...

Wouldn't William Atherton have had a better chance for a big career if he had been English? He could easily play the Oxford or Cambridge grad or the titled lord. He's smart and polished and would probably have fit into the world of English theater and television.

I'm glad I'm not in a public place because I am laughing much too loud. Masha, thank you for the picture, and Lorna, thank you for your insights and for the picture of William Atherton's sweater. Having grown up in the South when bouffant hair was all the rage, and it remained the rage for a long ti...

Re: I Just Watched...
I watched only a little of A NEW LEAF and MIKEY AND NICKY between timeouts of a basketball game. What I saw did not impress me or draw me in. Elaine May seems like a novice director who hasn't figured out where to put the camera, and she doesn't get the difference between stage dialogue and screen d...

I haven't seen THE CRITIC, but I am a big fan of Lesley Manville and have no trouble believing that she gives a great performance.

Re: Noir Alley
Just watched Woman in Hiding and think it is pretty good, all things considered. Probably a 3 out of 4 stars. At least a 2+. Biggest draw back would be too many things happen that are improbable. Having spent time in the areas where it supposedly happens may influence my rating. Glad Ronald Reagan ...

Re: Bunuel in Mexico at MOMA
Please keep us posted if you see some of the films. The only Mexican film of his I've seen is LOS OLVIDADOS, which I liked less than many critics. Buñuel kept announcing as great discoveries things about the darkness of the world that I've taken for granted since I was five years old.

1949 is one year that rarely gets mentioned, but here are some I find great- On The Town The Window White Heat The Third Man The Heiress The Set up Champion Side Street Mighty Joe Young Intruder In The Dust I also think that 1949 is a good year. I even like all the Best Picture nominees! I'll add: ...

The comedy routines of Nichols and May seem dated to me, though I can see how they would have been fresh 60+ years ago.
I will also confess an allergy or aversion to Peter Falk in doses greater than, say, two minutes at a time.

Re: The end of the Homosexual murderer?
A most interesting subject. I recall the gay couple who murder someone in a James Bond film and then go hand in hand into the sunset, but I can't remember which film. A related subject is whether you can have an African-American murderer. Yes, if like A Soldier's Story, most or all of the suspects a...

Re: February 2024 Schedule Posted, 31 Days of Oscar
The other night I turned on TV, decided to check out TCM, and got THE POWER OF FILM. At that moment there was an extended plot summary of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, so I switched channels. Howard Suber is the scholar whose research on CITIZEN KANE Pauline Kael appropriated without credit for her long es...
