Re: Welcome Michael Hoey as Our Guest Author in March

Everyone, make sure to drop in during Mike's two days on the SSO, because he has had a life and career that could qualify him as a guest for two months (sorry, Mike, but it's true, my friend!). I guarantee that you will greatly enjoy chatting with this fascinating writer and filmmaker, and all-aroun...

Re: Joseph Calleia

I've always admired Joseph Calleia and enjoy watching him in anything. He was a terrific nonverbal actor, and could do so much with that incredible face!

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

That's terrific! I've always enjoyed Denny Miller's work. And he was quite the specimen in his prime--just a couple days ago I saw a few minutes of the GILLIGAN'S ISLAND episode in which he wears nothing but a pair of tiny cut-off shorts. He's much more costumed in his WAGON TRAIN episodes! If you c...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Thanks! I will certainly let you all know when the Glenda Farrell book becomes available, and I'd love to come back and talk all about her wonderful life and career. I have a Facebook page called "Glenda Farrell: Hollywood's 'Hardboiled Dame'," and also a "Three Bad Men" page, if...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Yes, Ward Bond was an extremely prolific actor. He always was employed. Even when his political activities hurt his career after World War II, he had enough friends in the business to keep him going. His friendships with Ford and Wayne really helped his career. But the key to his success was his abi...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Yes, it's true that Ford basically said that he wouldn't direct MISTER ROBERTS without Fonda in it. But Ford couldn't simply film a play; he had to turn the work into a "John Ford film," after all.

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

At some point, I will post the Francis & Grace photos here! Yes, that scene in THE WINGS OF EAGLES includes items from Ford's own office, and Bond's take on his own mentor is the true highlight of that film! The frontispiece of my book is a portrait of Bond as "John Dodge." No, Pappy a...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Ford did not paint himself, but he did sketch on occasion; for example, he drew caricatures of Ward Bond as a gorilla! Throughout his career, he demonstrated his knowledge and understanding of Remington and Russell, particularly in SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON and THE SEARCHERS. It is true that Ford &qu...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Yes, Ward is totally convincing in A GUY NAMED JOE. I've always thought that he was cast perfectly in this film. He originally appeared (briefly) with Spencer Tracy in the latter's first film--Ford's UP THE RIVER (1930), and then went on to play his pal in A GUY NAMED JOE 13 years later. You are rig...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

I'm so pleased that the subject of Francis Ford has been mentioned. I tried to discover as much as possible about Francis, so he finally could be given his due. He really was a pioneer filmmaker, and there would never have been a JOHN FORD without FRANCIS FORD! Unfortunately so little of Francis' wo...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

So many good questions! All of them are answered in my book, but I'll try at least to touch upon them here. As far as Bond's preparation for his roles, he basically studied the script, focused on the character and learned his lines. He may have been fun-loving in his personal life, but he took his w...

Re: The Q & A for Scott Allen Nollen on Sat. 2/8 & Sun. 2/9

Yes, Ward is excellent in MY DARLING CLEMENTINE. Ford built up his role as Morgan Earp, and let Ward add some personal touches, such as his famous "horse whinny," which he does to Linda Darnell, who tosses a pitcher of milk in his face! Ford (as he usually did) also lovingly featured Bond'...
