Re: The March 2014 Schedule for TCM
Thank you so much, Masha, for reminding me to tune in next Saturday for The Plot Thickens . I loved the Withers movies, but I always thought Edna May Oliver was best in the part and Murder on a Honeymoon was the best film in the series, with its on-location shooting at Catalina. It's been so long si...

Re: Joseph Calleia
My favorites, among this great character actor's films, were the ones I saw most when I was growing up. I remember him best from After the Thin Man , but I also enjoyed him in The Gorilla . Lugosi was wasted in the film and The Ritz Brothers weren't my cup of tea, but Calleia and some of the other a...

Re: Behind Locked Doors (1948)
You have a good point. I wasn't, of course, thinking of the Ulmer films. I was considering the rest of PRC's output, like the Lash La Rue westerns that Eagle-Lion continued to release after it took over. And you are so right about John Alton and Anthony Mann. Both men did some remarkable work earlie...

Re: Behind Locked Doors (1948)
Thanks so much for bringing this film up. It's one of those low-budget little gems that came from an unlikely studio but had the advantage of a solid cast and crew. When this film came out, Eagle-Lion had just taken over Producers Releasing Corporation and PRC was considered the lowest of the low on...

Re: Mary Astor, SOTM??
Yes, Mary Astor was excellent in Dodsworth and it was wonderful to see her in The Great Lie on TCM last night too. This is the film for which she received an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. She was so good in any role she played!

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
Hi Brian, That's a great story about She Wolf of London . (I did have the feeling that despite the quality of the cast, that the movie was kind of rushed). Did Don Porter have much to say about appearing in such film noirs as 711 Ocean Drive (1950), The Racket (1951) or The Turning Point (1952)? Di...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
Thanks for the kind words. There's one other thing I meant to mention about Don Porter at Universal. In addition to being rushed from one project to another (The studio wanted to get the most out of its contract players,) he said it was an uphill battle trying to remember what he was supposed to be ...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
Love the story about trying for British accents in Romeo and Juliet! There was a very nice fellow that I knew quite well named Milt Subotsky. Although Milt was originally a New Yorker, he was co-founder of Amicus productions, which was extremely successful making horror films in Britain. His first, ...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...
I caught Svengoolie a few weeks ago when he was running She Wolf of London . I got a real kick out of it because I had a chance to speak with the star of the film, Don Porter, many years ago and he told me a couple of funny stories about shooting it. Porter was under contract to Universal for severa...

Hi, glad to be here at last!
I've often visited the board and wanted to answer a post, only to goof somewhere in the registration process and give up after a couple of tries. I'm afraid the fault lies with me ... I do wish that I had grown up as part of the computer generation! But, hey, the fact that I'm a tad older means that...
