Re: Gone With or Without fanfare

What terrible news to wake up to. I'm deeply saddened. He and Peter Cushing were my first childhood heroes and I can't imagine my Saturday afternoons without visiting with their various screen characters at our local cinema. I was fortunate enough to meet both men. I'll never forget Sir Christopher'...

To elaborate on Cagney's comment about Miss Sheridan: "A three pack a day smoker."

She's always been a fave.

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

Well . . . can't say I didn't warn ya, Moira. BTW: Was it the color print they showed? The only televised version I've ever seen was in b&w, which leaves B.G. as the film's sole saving grace. I put myself through the CURUCU ordeal just once more when I was able to see the color version on a boot...

Re: CANDIDS II

Fascinating yet disturbing image of young Drew, Joe. She was definitely headed into self-destruction, another Hollywood child star casualty, and a destiny not completely surprising given her heritage. But thankfully she saved herself from an ignominious final curtain call and really became a fine ac...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

I reckon it depends on your definition of cheesy fun, Moira. It ultimately results in such a letdown that - to me anyway: a Monsterkid - the film sinks to the bottom of the barrel - or the Amazon, if you will. A lot of monster movie fans agree with this assessment but . . . you might get a kick out ...

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

The color photography is nice (provided they show the color print), Beverly Garland is always nice, but without giving anything away, the movie turns out to be a HUGE disappointment.

And Mr. Ameche delivered one of the most simple yet most heartfelt and dignified Oscar acceptances. A true gentle and humble man:

Re: CANDIDS II

Bogie had the same insecurity when it came to his career, Joe. When no offers were forthcoming through agent Swifty Lazar, Bogie would sit in his usual booth at Romanoff's and actually lament: "Well, I guess no one wants me."

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

John Agar was my first favorite sci-fi hero when I was a young'un watching his movies REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, TARANTULA and THE MOLE PEOPLE. I was fortunate both to interview and get to know John later in his life (we never personally met but talked often by phone and through his fan club journal)....

Re: Bad Movies You Love

Well, ZERO HOUR is a blast - especially if you've first seen AIRPLANE! The Zuckers shamelessly ripped it off.

What's even more hilarious is its version of Winnipeg. Lived in the city for all my life and what's shown on the screen sure ain't anything I'm familiar with.

Re: This week on SVENGOOLIE...

And that first look at the boneless corpse was pretty gross, too - especially back in the day when I was a young'un and firrt saw it on the big screen. But overall, like you say: Effective if restrained. Which most modern day horror films could take a lesson from. I'm still disturbed by WOLF CREEK a...

Re: Joseph Calleia

Joseph Calleia became one of my faves thanks to the introduction of TCM into my city about ten years ago. Prior to that, as a classic movie buff, I certainly knew of his name but really didn't know much about him. Then I began catching his performances courtesy of TCM and right off the bat became a ...
