Re: Between Two Worlds

Thanks so much,Moira for all the info on Faye. I recall now I saw Guilty Bystander last year but I guess Faye didn't make an impression. but I do remember how interesting it was to see Mary Boland in a completely different role- and so good too. I'll certainly have a look at Lady Gangster. You are p...

Re: Between Two Worlds

Thanks so much, Moira . I enjoyed Danger Signal - had never even heard of it! Like Faye Emersen more and more. just a pity she made so few films. This film had shades of Mildred Pierce, with Zachary Scott romancing the young Mona Freeman. Interesting and different role for Rosemary De Camp. Just a s...

Re: COMPOSER BIOPICS

Funny how it was nearly always the composers whom Hollywood honed in on, not the lyricists ,though of course Porter and Berlin did their own lyrics. I always feel I hear too much Rodgers and Hammerstein and not enough Rodgers and Hart. Amazing of course how Richard Rodgers went from writing the musi...

Re: A TCM Interview with the Ladies of Film Noir

Love that YouTube video of Audrey Totter acting to the camera. Alongside Doris Day's song!
I'm so glad Audrey got this leading role even though the Robert Montgomery camera technique didn't really work in LADY IN THE LAKE.

Re: Between Two Worlds

The 1930 Outward Bound couldn't hold a candle to Between Two Worlds - in my opinion. The 1940s script and cast far outshone the early talkie. I imagine Leslie Howard would have been impressive on stage but he seemed a tad over dramatic on the screen which is unusual for him. I did like Beryl Mercer ...

Re: Eve Arden

I think everybody loves Eve Arden! She stands out in any film she is in. Famous for her wisecracking delivery, I wish she hadn't been quite so typecast. No reason really she couldn't do drama - or musicals. I 've heard Eve sing a few times including the funny "I'm unlucky at gambling". Als...

COMPOSER BIOPICS

Hollywood scriptwriters liked to play fast and loose with the lives of popular composers, but the public didn't know or care. We got a feast of stars and songs. Here's a list off the top of my head. Maybe it can be added to? Jerome Kern - Robert Walker George Gershwin - Robert Alda Cole Porter - Car...

Re: Dan Dailey: Likable, Talented, or...Not?

I like Dan Dailey's easy style though haven't seen too many of his films. I've just been listening to him harmonising with Ethel Merman ("Play a Simple Melody") and he is very good and he certainly wasn't outshone by Ethel in There's No Business Like Showbusiness. He played a slightly diff...

Re: "THE LETTER" (1940)

I might be a bit late but can I say how appreciative I am of CineMaven's fantastic review of THE LETTER.A film I always seemed to avoid until a couple of years ago when I saw it with an audience on the big screen. So many films can have such a powerful impact when seen as they should be seen, in a c...

Re: 7 Days in (Le) May

I love this thriller .Great cast led by Lancaster and Douglas, with Fredric March as the beleaguered President.
Lancaster stole the acting honours as the general planning a coup. Edmund O'Brien also very good as a senator who proves his worth .Excellent direction from John Frankenheimer.

Re: Remakes

Most folk I know prefer the Margaret Sullavan version of BACK STREET, or even the earlier Irene Dunne version, but I prefer the 50s version with Susan Hayward . Vera Miles was also very good in this version as the shrewish wife of John Gavin.

Re: Between Two Worlds

Yes, so good to see a new film and like it very much. I only saw BETWEEN TWO WORLDS for the first time recently and was very impressed. The whole cast is superb and the supernatural plot is so inventive. I wonder if Faye Emerson was expected to go further, I don't know her career but she was very go...
