Re: Crossfire
Thanks for all the interesting comments on this excellent film. The three Roberts are so good, especially Ryan who is just perfect in this sort of part. Definitely Oscar worthy. Robert Young was the big surprise - as everyone says, he played the detective so well, with the cool detachment that remin...

SHOW THEM NO MERCY, a 30s Fox drama, with Rochelle Hudson and Edward Norris as a young married couple caught in a kidnapping plot by Cesar Romero, Bruce Cabot and Edward Brophy.
It's always good to see Cesar in a serious role and he does well as the leader of the gang.

Thank you for excellent review of Roman's career. I had no idea of his age, or that he died so young.

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
JEANETTE MACDONALD: I always wished Jeanette had done more modern dress films. Aside from a few like SWEETHEARTS, it was always costume. I think she could have been perfect in romantic comedy - or drama - or more musicals where she could show her dancing expertise. Her singing of the title song, to ...

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
LOVELY TO LOOK AT is very good, but I used to get annoyed because ROBERTA (of which it was a remake) disappeared and I feared I would never catch up with it. Fortunately , ROBERTA did become available.

Re: WHAT MUSICALS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?
I always remember a visit to Hollywood with the Jeanette MacDonald International FanClub. A viewing of NEW MOON was looked forward to, but the County Museum showed the 1930 version! I think I may have been the only one there who didn't mind , because I had just discovered Grace Moore in ONE NIGHT OF...

Re: Your Favorite Musical Sequences
This a a great thread. Back in 2008, Carrie.Liz mentioned Jane Wyman's "Taking a Slow Burn", a great little number from LET's DO IT AGAIN. Great arrangement for Jane and she does it so well. I seem to recall this film was a remake of THE AWFUL TRUTH. Spine tingling for me is Judy's "T...

Re: Best and Worst Lines in Movie History
What a great thread. So many lines just bring a smile to your face as you remember the scene and the delivery. I only have to say "Prove it" to picture the man in black, Jack Palance, confronting little Elisha Cook in SHANE. Jean Hagen proved her talent in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, with that li...

Re: Robert Ryan: The Man and His Films
Hi Vienna. You're writing from the U.K.? Where are you exactly and how did you come to classic films? I'm from the part of the UK that would like to be independent - Scotland! - well, I would, anyway. Watching TV I guess was my way into vintage Hollywood. But British films never did anything for me...

Re: Looking for recommendations for good movie reads
I am surprised there isn't more on this thread. So many good books out there. I'm re- reading HITCHCOCK AND SELZNICK by Leonard Leff (1987). This partnership was never going to survive as both men had to be in charge.Very readable with lots of illustrations. THE BIG BOOK OF 'B' MOVIES or HOW LOW WAS...

No doubt that Angela should have been a bigger movie star. Such a good actress.
I will never forget seeing her in GYPSY on stage in London. Just terrific.

Re: Irene Dunne
One of my favorite actresses. Irene sang some beautiful songs too, mostly by Jerome Kern. Who can forget "Smoke gets in your eyes" or "Yesterday's" from ROBERTA, Or "Folks who live on the hill" from HIGH,WIDE AND HANDSOME. A triple threat really - she could do comedy, d...
