Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I guessed I have never been very attracted by the 'Latino type'. My type is more the witty, educated Anglo-Saxon or the tall brooding type like William S. Hart. I recorded Bonjour Tristesse (1958, O. Preminger) recently. This adaptation of Françoise Sagan's novel boasts a very starry cast: Jean Sebe...

Re: What are you reading?

hello JackFavell! I haven't been much around as I was finishing my book. But now, I'll have a little more time. I need to read that Frederica Maas book.

Re: What are you reading?

I read recently Lenore Coffee: Storyline - Recollections of a Hollywood Screenwriter . It's a very interesting autobiography of a woman screenwriter who started working in Hollywood in 1919. She worked for DeMille, Clara Kimball Young, Thalberg, Goldwyn, etc. It's a very sharp view of the wings of H...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

...Never seen the attraction of Ricardo Cortez though and Antonio Moreno is completely beyond me. Home grown Americans could masquerade as Latins just for the mystic. That went out of the window with sound.  HUH?  http://i618.photobucket.com/albums/tt270/CineMaven/RICA...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

What really stroke me about Die Frau, nach der man sich sehnt is how much the Dietrich lighting and costume looked like Garbo's. I remember a book where there was two pictures side by side of Garbo in The Kiss and Marlene in Die Frau. They looked like sisters.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Glad you enjoyed Erotikon, Alison. I felt the film looked ahead of its time with its hot seduction scene. And I also feel it's better than Ecstasy which looks more dated in structure and like a 'talking silent'.

Re: What are you reading?

I am currently reading It Took Nine Tailors , the autobiography of Adolphe Menjou. It's fascinating to read about the shooting of some fabulous pictures such as Chaplin's A Woman of Paris . The film took 8 months to be shot! And Menjou describes the length that Chaplin went through to get what he wa...

intothenitrate wrote:The documentary "Discovering the It Girl" is also included on the Kino release of IT. It's the one narrated by Courtney Love. Is that the one you're talking about CCF?
No, CCF is talking about a newly produced BBC documentary broadcast on BBC4 recently.

That's an excerpt of Hollywood (1980), the Brownlow & Gill documentary. I wouldn't be surprised if in the new doc they lifted part of the Brooks interviews and so on.

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I'm still trying to find the German-language version of "La kermesse héroïque", shot simultaneously by Jacques Feyder. Françoise Rosay plays the same role as in the French version, but the other actors (Paul Hartmann, Charlotte Daudert, Albert Lieven) are different. The title is "Die...

Re: Prohibition (2011, K. Burns & L. Novick)

You're right, Red River. I was thinking the same thing when the programme was over. I wonder if we ever learn from past errors. I guess the drug problem is vast and complex. But there has been several attempts in various European countries to control the trade of marijuana. It's certainly a way to g...
