Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

I agree, she does seem more approachable, more real than Loren. I like Gina. I never had that feeling. I like them both. But my opinion is based more on Italian films rather than English-speaking films. I guess it makes a difference. Sophia played as many working-class girls as Gina in Italy. It mi...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Actually there was a follow-up to Pane, amore e fantasia , it's Pane, amore e gelosia (1954) also directed by Comencini. I'll try to see it one of these days. Perhaps it will be shown in a cinema soon like the first one ? There is even another sequel called Pane, amore e... (1955) this time directed...

Re: Vittorio De Sica

After that terrible Catene (1949, R. Matarazzo), I needed to see a good film. So I went to a cinema to see Pane, amore e fantasia (Bread, Love and dreams, 1953) a Luigi Comencini comedy with Vittorio De Sica and Gina Lollobrigida. This delightful film takes place in a remote Italian village where th...

Re: WHAT FOREIGN FILMS HAVE YOU WATCHED LATELY?

Recently I watched an Italian melodrama recorded on TV, Catene (Chains, 1949) by Raffaello Matarazzo with Amadeo Nazzari and Yvonne Sanson. This film was at the top of the BO in Italy when it came out. Matarazzo catered for the general public with weepies that have not aged well. I am rather surpris...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Yesterday I watched The Fan (1949, O. Preminger) with Madeleine Carroll, Jeanne Crain and George Sanders. This adaptation of a famous Oscar Wilde play is for me a failure. Modifying the structure of the storyline is not really a problem (Lubitsch did it as well in his Lady Windermere's Fan in 1925),...

Re: George Raft

Sorry to drop in suddenly, but there is a joke I MUST share with you. In the April 78 issue of Films in Review, there is a great article about Raft's career. It starts with this joke by George Burns: George Raft and Gary Cooper once played a scene in front of a cigar store; and it looked like the wo...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Yesterday I saw The Emperor's Candlesticks (1937, G. Fitzmaurice) with William Powell and Luise Rainer. It's amusing spy-comedy where Powell plays a Polish spy trying to outwit a dangerous Russian spy in the person of Countess Olga Mironova (L. Rainer). They both hid some ultra-secret messages insid...

Re: WHAT FILMS HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Really glad you enjoyed the three versions, Fernando. :) The two 1931 versions are obviously completely different from Love in the Afternoon . Wilder gave it a more comic slant. And let's face it, 50s cinema was very different from the early talkie period. I still believe that Czinner is a forgotten...

I guess I have to follow the advice... at least for a while. I am very attached to my James Abbe portrait from 1921.

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

I thought that the scene when Enid Markey decides to kill Frank Keenan was quite devastating. She looked dishevelled and completely beaten until she finds the gun left by Keenan on the table. She takes it and moves slowly towards him as he lays asleep (completely drunk). Then, she pulls the trigger....

Yesterday I went to see some digitized films at the French Cinémathèque. They have a few Triangle pictures which are the only extant prints of these films. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa123/cleteux/SilverScreen/DesertMan.jpg The Desert Man (1917, William S. Re: THE MACOMBER AFFAIR 1947 ZOLTAN KORDA

Thanks to Fernando, I was also able to discover this very interesting Zlotan Korda feature. I am amazed how mature the film feels compared with the tedious The Sun Also Rises . I felt the script gave an opportunity to all the characters to show their depth psychologically. The hunting party evolves ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Yesterday I watched a William S. Hart's western White Oak (1921, Lambert Hillyer). Hart plays a Missouri gambler who decides to avenge his little sister who was the victim of a seducer. The film starts on a paddle boat on the Mississippi river and ends in the desert in a wagon train. Based upon a Ha...
