Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Moira - Love that pix from The Lightning Warrior . George looked like he was having a good time in this (except when he donned an Indian headdress). I wonder how he would have done with Massacre ( (1934) a film that championed the ongoing plight of Native Americans? It’s one role that he campaigned ...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

For hbenthow: It’s always a pleasure to watch Glenda Farrell (I especially liked her in Keyhole ). She had a handle on comedy, where Brent usually struggled with it. Their two film efforts: Snowed Under (1936) where she is hunting him down for alimony, and Twin Beds (1942) where Brent looks ill at e...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Hello Brian, From what I learned, it was a fire in a New Jersey-based nitrate film vault (1937) destroyed most of Fox studio’s pre-1935 releases. The prints that survive are most likely copies from films that were still in circulation. Ex-Bad Boy was restored by Universal and shown at Capitalfest in...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Rerun: Glad you mentioned your visit to Brent’s ranch. His enthusiasm for horses and racing prompted him to take out a license as a trainer (1961). Shortly after he received his license he enthused, “I love the atmosphere of racing, the life around horses and the friendships I have made. My horses …...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

For Joe: Spiral Staircase Brent didn’t care for his performance in The Spiral Staircase saying, “I was not very convincing.” Critics thought differently – Variety called it an “out of the ordinary portrayal." Author/historian Anthony Slide said there was high praise to be heaped upon Brent and ...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

For Moira: Brent's Directors Brent was especially fond of director Edmund Goulding ( Dark Victory, The Old Maid, 'Til We Meet Again, The Great Lie ). The two vacationed together in Hawaii and loved to joke around (Brent affectionately called Goulding "Lucy"). George rarely had issues with ...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Moira - I find his performance in The Go-Getter to be an undiscovered “gem.” It’s a heart-breaking performance he offers. His character comes across as genuine—his limp (from an accident) only makes him stronger. George doesn’t often “get” to me, but he did in this. http://i1089.photobucket.com/albu...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

For Joe: Brent's personal favorites: Brent was especially fond of Dark Victory , ‘Til We Meet Again , and The Rains Came. Was he close to his children? George was considerate of his children’s needs while they were growing up and took pride in their accomplishments. Daughter Suzanne told director Br...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Welcome aboard Hibi - I agree - a TCM Star of the Month tribute for Brent is long overdue. Here a my responses to your queries: Brent's one "big love" :George and his fifth wife Janet were married twenty-six years. She was a real anchor in his life. A few years before she passed away (1974...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

For CineMaven: You have zeroed in on Brent's two favorite leading ladies: Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck Brent was appreciative and had great admiration for both Davis and Stanwyck (perhaps leaning more towards Stanwyck due to her lack of temperament). Davis and Brent were lovers during the filmin...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Moira - my response to your last two "flurry of questions": 3)George (age 17) made his Broadway debut in director Guthrie McClintic’s The Dover Road in December 1921. He played a servitor in which he had one line “Yes, Mr. Dominic.” Brent had spent time at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin while...

Re: Scott O'Brien to Visit on 10/25 & 10/26

Thanks for the warm welcome Moira. Here is my response to your first two questions: 1)Director Reddin contacted me while I was completing my project on Ruth Chatterton (Brent’s second wife). I had dug deep into Brent’s early years (1904-1932). Reddin flew from Dublin to interview me for the document...

Re: The Q & A with Mary Wickes Biographer, Steve Taravella

Steve ... many thanks for your prompt, straightforward and fascinating answer. It's amazing how many actors recreate their past or choose to ignore it. Perhaps it goes with the profession. I found this to be true with Ann Harding, who was also bullheaded. She cut off her daughter, her grandchild, he...

Re: The Q & A with Mary Wickes Biographer, Steve Taravella

Thanks Steve, for the deep insight into a favorite character actress who easily took to the spotlight as the stars she supported. Recently watched "I'll See You In My Dreams," and she makes her character as vital and important as those of Day and Thomas. What came as the biggest surprise a...
