Re: Charlie's Loves

He was obviously catnip for some ladies, Georgia Hale thought him her lucky star even before she met him and put up with some terrible behaviour and always forgiven. She speaks of him as two seperate people, the artist which was the nice side and the man who was self absorbe party animal. Lita Grey...

Re: Cinema Europe (1996) via Youtube

It's nice to see that those are up on the web again since the DVD is out of print. It's one of the best documentaries about silent cinema, along with Hollywood, and should be seen by all silent film fans. :)

Re: The Pregnancy Thread

Alison, it's nice to hear how things are getting along for you. The hormone changes that come with pregnancy must be so bothersome, it's completely understandable to break down and cry but I can see how awful it must be all the same. My mother got pregnant when I was Libby's age, it was fascinating ...

Re: Victor Sjöström Films

If you do you can tell us what the new soundtrack is like. I wonder if it could possibly be an improvement over Matti Bye's. To me it would be hard to imagine the film without that soundtrack, it's pretty unique. I don't always like Bergman. I can see why Wild Strawberries and other films by Ingmar ...

Re: Victor Sjöström Films

They are showing The Phantom Carriage at the Stockholm Cinematek with live music by Matti Bye. I think Victor Sjöström's best performance by far was in Wild Strawberries, with his performance in The Phantom Carriage coming as a close second. They are pretty similar stories even if it's not apparent ...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

MGM did produce a number of dramas at that time that could not be called commercial, though. I think I recall from a documentary that Irving Thalberg was interested in supporting film as an art, he let Murnau have free reign for instance. It's a shame that they didn't have faith in The Wind.

The parents.

Ah yes, of course.

Re: Ain't it the Truth

I love nostalgia. Like Klondike says there are many things that have changed for the better since that time, and I think it's wrong to blindly idealize any time period. But there are certainly good things that have been lost, maybe irrevocably. I'm young, but I did grow up just before the internet b...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

Myrnaloyisdope, I just have to say I really like your reviews. I find that I generally agree with what you say, so I will have to watch The Cheat soon. I can also recommend to you The Dragon Painter, a great film with Sessue Hayakawa. Another of his films is available on the films of WWI DVD, althou...

Re: Soundtracks

I agree with above posters re. To Kill a Mockingbird, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Mary Poppins, the Busby Berkley musicals and others! One of my favourite film composers is Danny Elfman. Sometimes he's inspired, like in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride or Edward Scissorhands, and sometimes h...

Re: Way Down East (1920) and Griffith's editing style

I think most people who view it today think it's racist - based on the dictionary definition of the word - and find it disturbing viewing for that reason. It's something that makes at least me feel optimistic, because it shows that we've come away from the kind of thinking BoaN stands for. That does...

Re: WHAT SILENTS & PRE-CODES HAVE YOU SEEN LATELY?

It's actually a really good intro to Pickford considering the range she shows when she plays Unity Blake. :) I can also recommend Daddy Long-Legs. Firstly it shows her in her little girl role which made her so famous, so it's a good presentation of what the Pickford persona was about. Second, it's o...

Re: Way Down East (1920) and Griffith's editing style

I should hope so. Thanks for the qoute from your wonderful interview, Christine! And re. the government scene, I think Mr Arkadin said in the BoaN thread that something like that did happen - uneducated black people being made representations for South Carolina that is. However, the issue here is th...

Re: Way Down East (1920) and Griffith's editing style

Probably most people's, though. Actually, one of the things I've always found interesting about Griffith's films is what they say about the time when they were made. Some of them are more timeless, while others clearly show that they could only be a product of a certain time period in history. As Wi...
