I'm at the point where I am not sure what's even being argued anymore. The KKK of the 10's and 20's presented itself as a populist group and was extremely popular, particularly in the midwestern US. Nonetheless they were still a racist and a terrorist organization. They were more palatable back then...

That's a great documentary about an absolutely fascinating man. Was there any sort of production code in place by the time of Broken Blossoms ? I find it absurd that a movie that proclaims itself pro-miscegenation, would cast Richard Barthelmess as the Chinese lead. I know that in spite of Sessue Ha...

I agree with Synnove as well. I really admire the film for it's technical achievement and how well it's made, but I always get torn up when I watch it. I watch it with a bizarre combination of awe and horror, sometimes I am almost in tears of joy, and other times I am egregiously offended. I can't r...

I saw some clips of J'Accuse in a documentary series on silent film in Europe. It looked pretty interesting, and I am very interested in WWI, so I'll have to check it out. I really liked Gance's Napoleon , the snowball fight is fantastic, and the finale with the 3 screens is like Cinerama 30 years i...

The other film I watched was Design For Living this didn't retain as much of the flavour of Coward but it didn't matter, it was directed by Lubitsch, it was full of his touches. Brilliant casting of Gary Cooper, Frederick March and Miriam Hopkins with what has to be the best manage a trois ever bro...

A King Vidor silents collection would be fantastic, I have The Big Parade, The Patsy, Show People, and The Crowd, bootlegged, but I would love official releases. The Crowd is easily my favorite silent film.

1944 was pretty bad with Going My Way sweeping pretty much everything over the far superior Double Indemnity . 1950 had Judy Holliday winning best actress over 2 all-time great performances in Gloria Swanson's Norma Desmond and Bette Davis' Margo Channing. 1980 had Ordinary People beating out Raging...

Strike is quite good. The comedy in that film was completely unexpected. But I think in the scheme of things people generally view Eisenstein's silents as Potemkin and then every thing else. I've never had the sense that people view October as being significantly better than Strike Potemkin is over...

I like both, but give my love to Love Affair. I think the weepy nature of the story works better in black & white.

Charles Boyer does the continental thing better than Cary Grant, and Irene Dunne is really funny, though Deborah Kerr certainly isn't bad.

Love Affair is tighter too.

I'm currently working on watching the 1000 greatest films according to this site: http://www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000.htm (it's a great list, you should check it out). Anyway out of the 670+ films I've watched from it, The Producers is tied with Eyes Wide Shut for my lowest ranking of 3/10. Admi...

The final half hour of The Awful Truth is absolutely fantastic, and Irene Dunne absolutely takes the film away from Cary Grant. I've never seen anyone else do that. I think my favorite comedy scene is when Katharine Hepburn loses her shoe in Bringing Up Baby and she does the whole "I was born o...

Well here's my top 5 classic Hollywood actors: 1. Cary Grant - I adore this man, he's versatile, cool, handsome, funny, charming. I could gush forever about him. 2. Henry Fonda - The quintessential everyman. 3. Kirk Douglas - I've seen about 10 of his movies now, and I have no idea if he can act, bu...
