Sidekicks

Glad to be of help re Yancy Concerning Jock Mahoney's earlier incarnation as the Range Rider , his sidekick on that show was a young man named Dick West, whose sthick was youthful enthusiasm, and who was played by a young actor named Dick Jones. Dick Jones later had a season or so as star of Buffalo...

"They sing of Yancy Derringer On every danger trail, On riverboat, in manor house, And now and then in jail..." This series fit into the trend then going about weapons gimmicks. Yancy carried a derringer (natch) in his hat. Pahoo had, under his blanket, a single-barrel shotgun, 10 gauge o...

To: ken123 & mrsl; You limited your discussion to theatrical fare. Meander amongst the cast of the late, lamented Deadwood. See if you don't find suitable talent there. Anyone launching a new Western for theatrical release would have that pool of talent to draw from. And its a very good one.

Whaddya know about Leo Gordon?

I tracked down the 1957 film Black Patch with the thought of adding it to the "Norish Westerns (devotees of that topic may want to look it up), but I got sidetracked when I found that co-star Leo Gordon had been one of the screenwriters. I remembered him most vidivly for getting knocked about t...

CHEYANNE'S place in local culture

To: S.Holmes From: cmvgor: a memoir Rural Alabama, 1957. By a unanimous vote, my dad's weekly bible-class- with-decons'-meeting-afterward was reset from Tuesday nights to Wednesday nights because no one wanted to miss 'Cheyanne'. And, in violation of his own rule about movies on school nights, my da...

To: mrsl; Audie Murphy's undoubted accomplishments as a combat soldier and his unchallanged heroism are not the subject of this thread. Its about his performance in one role where humor was the objective. He did well in action and heavy, dramatic sequences; that was his strongest forte. As for light...

Cinco de Mayo (and Peckenpah)

I'm partial to John Huston's 'Under The Volcano' (1984) Albert Finney, Jacqueline Bisset and Anthony Andrews. Rich in culture clash; portrait of a fine mind in decline. Also, all these contributers with facts and opinions on Sam Peckenpah: Have they all bailed out of That Other Thread Over There? I'...

Comic Westerns

To: Dewey 1960,
A bit of memory trivia: When 4 FOR TEXAS was still in first-run, studio execs were taking legal action in Europe. Ads and posters Over There were giving major-type billing to Charles Bronson, who was a much bigger draw in their cinemas than the actual stars.
