April 2011 Schedule for TCM

Post by moira finnie »

The April 2011 TCM Schedule was up when I checked this earlier, (though sometimes these things disappear for awhile). In any case it was here:
http://www.tcm.com/schedule/month/?cid=&oid=4/1/2011

It looks as though Ray Milland is the SOTM on Tuesdays, though mercifully, no sign of The Thing with Two Heads or X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes or even Panic in the Year Zero on the schedule, but much to enjoy of this actor's work legitimately, such as Ministry of Fear,The Uninvited, Kitty, The Crystal Ball, Blonde Crazy (fantastic!), Beau Geste, Wise Girl, Night Into Morning, and, naturally, The Lost Weekend.

Or CIRCLE OF DANGER (a poor copy sits on my shelf) or X: THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES (unfortunately no copy sits on my shelf).

In addition to Ray Milland being Star of the Month, there is a

Salute to Walter Huston on April 6th with a line-up of films including American Madness, The Criminal Code and Kongo.

On the 7th, a salute to James Garner with a short line-up of films including the wonderful The Americanization of Emily.

The 1931 Frankenstein looks as if it has escaped the Universal vaults!

TCM honors the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with a line-up of films that includes Gettysburg.

Blonde Crazy with that wise-cracking duo, Cagney and Blondell.

A salute to Shirley Temple.

Tarzan joins the Bowery Boys on Saturday Morning.

The silent version of Camille with Alla Nazimova.

A salute to John Garfield.

Silents during the day on April 20th.

One of me favorites: A salute to Vic McLaglen (I gotta take me medicine!)

For all those clamoring for Morocco last month when Shanghai Express was shown, get out your tuxedos and gorilla costumes because it's on the schedule.

Just a Gigolo with William Haines

On the eve of the TCM Film Festival opening, a salute to Charles Laughton.

Opening night of the Festival is a salute to Gregory Peck!

Phenix City Story returns to the schedule for all of us who forgot to tivo last time!

At the end of the month, the Bowery Boys take a break on Saturday mornings and make room for, wait for it, BUCK ROGERS with Buster Crabbe!

And on Saturday night of the Festival, a salute to the music of the Gershwins with a line-up of films

I am really looking forward to April.

Wonder if there is any chance that Shirley Temple or James Garner might appear at the festival?

I think that would be great if they could come, though it may be a heroic effort for James Garner, who has had some serious health issues in recent years. (Besides, he is quite a shy man from all reports). I also wondered if Shirley Temple would come--wouldn't it be fantastic to see films such as Wee Willie Winkie or Since You Went Away with her there to see and possibly comment on them! I am hoping that one of the "keepers of the flame" to the rich Gershwin legacy, Michael Feinstein, might make an appearance to discuss his personal knowledge of their work, thanks to his mentorship under Ira Gershwin during the last years of his life.

I'd love to see Clara Bow's sons, Rex Bell, Jr. and George Bell make an appearance if they are up to it to honor their mother when the restoration of their mother's final film, Hoop-La (1933) is shown.

Wouldn't It would be "s'wonderful" if Gene Kelly's children could come to for the new restoration of An American in Paris? I bet Leslie Caron makes an appearance for sure if she can. She seems to be quite a robust lady and appears to have quite a rapport with Robert Osborne--which never hurts.

Ooops, we seem to have strayed away from the topic of the April schedule. Oh, well.

I sure hope the rest of the Universal horror inmates make a breakout too.

ON TOPIC...

The first time I saw Frankenstein it was the 1931 version on the evening movie, and it really, really scared me. I was about 8 or 9. That is good news that is is out of the chute.

OFF TOPIC...

Moira, having any of Gene Kelly's progeny would certainly be welcome. I think they would be great at TCM Fest.

Rex Bell, Jr., and George Bell would be wonderful to intro Hoop-La.

ON TOPIC AGAIN....

A tribute to Charles Laughton is definitely a plus. Directing Night of the Hunter was one of his greatest achievements...

And if Ray Milland is Star of the Month, they are sure to schedule....tah...dah...The Major and the Minor...Not a baseball movie, but a babes' ball
with a roomful of Veronica Lakes... ('40's version of a chick flick)

For the record, Rex, Jr is the only one still alive. His brother died some years ago. It would be great if he were there to talk about Clara.

kingrat wrote:Also on the April schedule, to my astonishment and delight: Home Before Dark. This is supposed to have one of Jean Simmons' greatest performances. TCM must have solved the rights issues that had kept this film out of circulation.
Home Before Dark (1958) is also on DVD now via Warner Archive for 19.95.
kingrat wrote:Looking forward to Ray Milland. Too bad that Golden Earrings and Arise, My Love aren't included, but TCM has shown the latter within the last year. So Evil My Love is the one that interests me most. Is that a 40s noir title or what?
I would describe So Evil My Love as a bit of a Victorian era film noir. The performances of Milland and Ann Todd are exceptionally good.

My recorder will be logging heavy miles in April. I'm particularly delighted to see a night of Tom Courtenay films, although most of these have shown previously:

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner (1962) A boy from the Irish slums reviews his troubled past while training for a school race. Cast: Tom Courtenay, Michael Redgrave, Alec McCowen. Dir: Tony Richardson. BW-104 mins

Billy Liar (1963) An emotionally stunted clerk retreats into his fantasies. Cast: Tom Courtenay, Mona Washbourne, Julie Christie. Dir: John Schlesinger. BW-99 mins

The Dresser (1983) A theatrical dresser tries to get an aging star through one more performance of King Lear. Cast: Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, Edward Fox. Dir: Peter Yates. C-118 mins

Otley (1968) A petty crook finds himself mistaken for a murderer and a secret agent. Cast: Tom Courtenay, Romy Schneider, Alan Badel. Dir: Dick Clement. C-91 mins

Private Potter (1962) A young soldier refuses to fight because of a divine vision. Cast: Tom Courtenay, Mogens Wieth, Ronald Fraser. Dir: Caspar Wrede. BW-89 mins
