While most folks might shy away from a documentary about pet cemeteries, Gates of Heaven manages to mix death, humor, and pathos into a heady brew that creates a different experience with each viewing. Perhaps the most astounding thing about this movie is how director Errol Morris gets these people to not just talk to him, but to open up their lives to his camera, reminding us that only the context of death can help us to comprehend the precious gift of life.
