The October Schedule for TCM

Hey, did you guys know that Jeanne Eagels (the real one, not Kim Novak) is going to be on TCM tomorrow morning in an early talkie of a classic? The Letter (1929) with Jeanne and Herbert Marshall (who is not the husband this go-round) is being aired at 8:45am ET. More at the link below. I've only seen parts of this, but Eagels was so intensely different than I expected. Btw, Reginald Owen plays her poor clueless hubby in the Somerset Maugham tale.

This appears to be a day devoted to Somerset Maugham (what a cool idea)...though I can't recommend Isle of Fury at 2:15pm...unless you would like to see the worst movie of Bogie''s career (yeah, this one is worse than Swing Your Lady). Still, I like Maugham's stories too much to miss some of these. I am really interested in seeing Dirty Gertie from Harlem, U.S.A. (1946). It's an African-American interpretation of Rain.

No wonder I was drawn to today's showings! My foggy brain somehow didn't make the connection last night as I was looking at the sched, I just knew I wanted to see all of the movies today. I love the anthology movies too, and was really intrigued by Dirty Gertie. Some of these films I already have recorded, but I may just plop in another disc and let it go to have them all in one place.

I've seen the Eagles version of Rain. I didn't like it. From what I remember, it was just too creaky even for me, and I often find charm in creakiness. Every other version was so much better. I couldn't really see Eagles' magic, either.

I would love to see Isle of Fury, though. I never heard of it but most interesting to me is The Circle, too bad I missed it. The premise sounds fascinating. I don't remember reading the story, unless it was one of Maugham's plays. Maybe I can find a way to record Isle of Fury this afternoon. Thank you for letting us know, Moira.

Miss Goddess, ISLE OF FURY is interesting in that it shows Bogart in an unconventional role, and really substandard given the hit he made as Duke Mantee. Actually, this was probably the first film where Bogie earned his WB reputation as "Bogie the Beefer" - not without cause, mind you. Not a classic by any means and Bogart did not need that Errol Flynn pencil-lined mustache any more than Cagney did in HE WAS HER MAN or TORRID ZONE . . . but there is a kind of cool octopus sequence to compensate for its programmer status.

Can't remember what happens exactly, but I believe so. I do recall Bogie surviving to the end of the movie. But it's pretty forgettable, certainly not on a par with REAP THE WILD WIND.
