When I teach Shakespeare, I always remind students of the fact that by the time the darker moments happen in the dramatic plays, it's dark outside, the stage is lighted by torches, candles, or small brazier fires, not unlike your experience with Howard's End. Those kinds of serendipitous additions to the drama never go unnoticed on some level by all of us.

To this day, I can't watch The Ghost and Mr. Chicken without the lights on.

That's a great way to make it real for the students. I am going to have to think about that the next time I watch or read Shakespeare. And I had no idea you taught Shakespeare, Christy! What plays do you teach, and what grade is it?

I am finding that if I set the mood right at the beginning with my little 1st graders, that's almost all I need to keep their attention riveted till the end of the class (disclaimer: this does not work when one to six kids have behavioral problems or attention deficit disorder).

Wendy, I currently teach college English and tutor at the college writing center. I've taught Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and many of the sonnets, but I adore the book Shakespeare by Peter Ackroyd. It tells of the practical side of his theatrical journey and it's a fascinating read.

I have taught Bilingual/ESL for 3-5th graders early in my career, and they are so sweet.

BTW, I have just heard from Monika Henreid, whom I met briefly at the TCMFF 2013, and she is enthusiastic and excited about her father, Paul Henreid, being June Star of the Month!

That's so cool! I didn't realize Paul Von Hernried was going to be SOTM! I am curious about Monika. My favorites performances of his (besides the iconic one) are in Hollow Triumph, Rope of Sand, Between Two Worlds and Night Train to Munich.

My class is taught in the actual historic school house from 1839. It runs from 9:30 in the morning to about 12:00 noon, except when the teachers tell us when they get there that their bus is due back at 11:15 instead and they have to be done in an hour less time than we prepared for. Sometimes they bring a snack which also changes the timing. We usually have 2 classes (20 kids) at the same time, so one class will go upstairs to the classroom to experience a school day from 1842 with "Miss Palmer", played by my friend Kay, and I take the other class downstairs and we pretend we're on board a whaling ship from the same time period. I make them pretend to be mice so I can get some quiet.

I will be done in June, just about the time I get it all perfect.

Anyone else watching Le Jour Se Leve? I am now a serious Jean Gabin devotee after Moira's lovely Guest Programmer stint and Touchez Pas au Grisbi.

Gabin is so adorable! And the story is so interesting up to this point. The flashback sequence started with a kind of gauzy veil-like, transition, and Gabin's interactions with all the females reveals what a charming devil he can be. And that Clara (Arletty) is a pretty cool customer, a woman of the world, but yet tenderhearted and fragile.

Gabin makes me feel him questioning his motives, the people around him, and how he perceives his own destiny with those expressive eyes. He was told by his girlfriend that he has one sad eye and one happy one, and it's obvious that his dual nature was obvious to her at this moment.

I really enjoyed this film.
Evidently when RKO remade this film in 1947, they tried to destroy every print of this film.

Jackie, Monika Henreid is working on a memoir of her father and a documentary about his life. She is a fun, bubbly, lively gal.

Dang! I was going to record Le Jour Se Leve! Aww, man. Forgot all about it. Does anyone know if it was on during Gabin day last year? I recorded the whole day practically. I somehow don't think it was.
