TCM/Bonhams Auction

I just got goosebumps watching the interstitial for the Bonhams auction. I swear I almost cried, they did this little commercial so well. Bill Marx talked about the Salvador Dali painting of his father, Harpo Marx, not to mention the painting of Harpo as Blue Boy. All the items shown are so invested in our classic film history... it was thrilling to think that you could actually touch, let alone own Sam Spade's leather chair from The Maltese Falcon. These are important, incredible items, like Laurel and Hardy's hats, but they also stressed that there would be reasonable items for sale as well, drawings and prints and scripts.

I hope everyone has a chance to see that marvelous interstitial the TCM
team prepared about the Bonham's auction. I would have posted a link,
but it's not up in the media room yet.

It was fabulous to hear about all the items up for sale in the auction
catalog and to learn a little about who currently owns the actual Maltese
Falcon!

One of my favorite treasures is my replica of the Falcon that I got thirty plus years ago at the old Scene of the Crime bookstore in Hollywood. The Falcon survived the Northridge earthquake (toppling from his perch on top of my apartment heater) and lost a small portion of one of his tail feathers but other than that, he sits today on top of the bookcase in my office watching over his domain.

My favorite piece is the Harpo Marx drawing by Salvador Dali.

My second favorite is Laurel and Hardy's hats.

My third favorite is Sam Spade's chair.

My dad said his favorite piece was a contract signed by both Preston Sturges and Ferenc Molnar.

I didn't see anything that could be called 'reasonably priced'.

I would go for an Edith Head sketch, the car or the chair.

I also saw a few handwritten letters that might appreciate in value even more.

The Joan Bennett cape is also lovely from The Man in the Iron Mask...


One of the better preserved costumes is the Cesar Romero jacket from Wee Willie Winkie...
