MichiganJ, thank you for the heads-up on the Night of the Hunter release.

I know of some Laughton fans who should be mighty pleased.

I think I'll add it to my own wish list. I'm not a huge admirer of the film, but the additional content sounds very interesting.

Also for November (blu-ray)/December (standard DVD), this jaw-dropping box set:

America lost and Found: The BBS Story

http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/769-am ... -bbs-story

Like the rest of America, Hollywood was ripe for revolution in the late sixties. Cinema attendance was down; what had once worked seemed broken. Enter Bob Rafelson, Bert Schneider, and Steve Blauner, who knew that what Hollywood needed was new audiences—namely, young people—and that meant cultivating new talent and new ideas. Fueled by money made from their invention of the superstar TV pop group the Monkees, they set off on a film-industry journey that would lead them to form BBS Productions, a company that was also a community. The innovative films produced by this team between 1968 and 1972 are collected in this box set—works created within the studio system but lifted right out of the countercultural id, and that now range from the iconic (Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Last Picture Show) to the acclaimed (The King of Marvin Gardens) to the obscure (Head; Drive, He Said; A Safe Place).

With tons of extras

I think The Last Picture Show is the only one that Jack Nicholson wasn't involved with in some way ;)

I know it's late, but just wanted to let members know that there's a big sale on Criterion titles at Barnes and Noble's website (I only recently found out about this myself).

Now that I'm making some money, I ordered the new edition of Modern Times, as well as the blu-rays of The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus (and I don't even have a Blu-Ray player...guess that'll be my Christmas wish). I also finally got the special editions of Trouble in Paradise and My Man Godfrey, which are prohibitively expensive if you're not buying on sale.

Essential Art House titles are marked down to $9.99 each, and shipping is free with a $25 order (though be prepared to pay tax on your order).

Lots of great titles coming from Criterion in the next few months. Biggest surprise is Island of Lost Souls on both DVD and Blu-ray:

Don't forget that Barnes and Noble is having their 50% Criterion titles sale:

Island of Lost Souls, a day after my birthday: It's a VERY good day! :D

I've already put in my order from B&N: Got The Great Dictator, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and High and Low (Blu) coming soon!

Some Criterions I've managed to snag for a steal over the last few months from sites like Amazon, Half.com, Deep Discount, etc.:

*Pickup on South Street
*The Importance of Being Earnest
*Mr. Hulot's Holiday
*Magnificent Obsession
*Floating Weeds
*All That Heaven Allows
*Eisenstein: the Sound Years (with Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible)
*The Horse's Mouth
*Pandora's Box

I've taken a break from DVD buying for a bit, but when Christmas comes around (which won't be much longer- yikes), I'll definitely be looking at the sales and hoping that some of the newer Criterion discs are marked down. I'm not sure if the new Seijun Suzuki Blu-rays will be on sale by then, but hopefully they will be. I'll also be hoping I can finally snag The Night of the Hunter and 8 1/2 on Blu, as well as the new Island of Lost Souls. Doubt I'll spring for the Three Colors trilogy - I'd like to see it on Blu-ray, but I'm not sure about owning it, especially at that price.

I highly recommend Night of the Hunter. The film looks gorgeous, and it includes the documentary Charles Laughton Directs "The Night of the Hunter", which is likely the best documentary on the making of a movie ever, and made me appreciate Laughton even more than I already did.

8 1/2 is also a great blu. Brief as her appearance is, Barbara Steele is stunning in HD.

For what it's worth, the word is that Barnes and Noble will be having their half off Criterion sale beginning the second week of November.
