Opera diva to appear in Downton Abbey

Post by stuart.uk »

Spoiler

I've just heard in episode 3 of the up-coming series Downton Abbey, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who many years ago sang a Charles and Diana's wedding, will appear. playing the real life Australian Opera singer Nellie Melba. According to writer Julien Fellows and he should know, Nellie will be the first factual character to appear in the show.

I'm not a fan of opera, but I like the New Zealand born Kiri, who is a youthful looking 69. I think she's a great jazz singer and great singer of musical show stoppers. I also remember she was the first person to sing the anthem for the first Rugby Union World Cup, World In Union as also performed by Shirley Bassey when the competition was held in Wales

If you're not aware of Dame Kiri, here she is with World In Union
