Wow CP! It's nice to see something on the colorful Tokyo Drifter, and you've written an amazing essay that's as pleasurable as the film.

Although I have seen the movie (and recorded it of TCM), I'm still a novice in the area of the rest of Suzuki's works. I guess I'd better check out Branded to Kill ASAP.

Thanks, Ciao! Patsy, for your "riff" on "Tokyo Drifter" and Suzuki. It's the only Suzuki film I've seen...and it is a treat for the senses!
I really love the way that the "theme" song is heard throughout the film in various ways-for great "familiar" effect.
I don't recall Tarantino "singling out" Suzuki either, as an influence, but he does pay (lenghty) homage to "Tokyo Drifter" in "Kill Bill" (I and II.)
Side note-I don't recall Scorsese mentioning Val Lewton as an influence, but it makes perfect sense...
