Guffey is a noir god, near the top of the list. Among his great notable noirs are SOUL OF A MONSTER, MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS, NIGHT EDITOR, SO DARK THE NIGHT, JOHNNY O'CLOCK, FRAMED, KNOCK ON ANY DOOR, THE RECKLESS MOMENT, IN A LONELY PLACE, CONVICTED, THE SNIPER, HUMAN DESIRE, PRIVATE HELL 36, NIGHTFALL and SCREAMING MIMI (all done for Columbia between 1944 - 1958.) He also did ALL THE KING'S MEN (49), THE STRANGE ONE (57), LET NO MAN WRITE MY EPITAPH (1960), HOMICIDAL (1961), KID GALAHAD (62), KING RAT (65), BONNIE & CLYDE (67) and THE SPLIT (68).

Burnett Guffey: And SCANDAL SHEET (Karlson), HUMAN DESIRE (Lang), TIGHT SPOT (Karlson), THE HARDER THEY FALL (Robson), THE BROTHERS RICO (Karlson), BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ (Frankenheimer), THE LEARNING TREE (Parks)...and GIDGET (Wendkos).

Over the past few months, he has inched ahead of Nicholas Musuraca for me (seeing THE SOUL OF A MONSTER this week for the first time confirmed his rise) and only the giant John Alton keeps him from the top.

We kick off tonight's "Best of Columbia Noir" series this evening at the
Roxie with an incredible double bill of JOHNNY O'CLOCK and BLIND SPOT, both from 1947.

An excited and enthusiastic packed house greeted JOHNNY O'CLOCK and its co-feature BLIND SPOT tonight. If the crowd was any indication how things might fare, then I think we're in for a very hot series. The crowd loved JOHNNY; most in the audience had never seen it before and were deep into it from scene one. MissG: you shoulda been there. Judith: I had to think of you when Jeff Chandler turns up uncredited in JOHNNY O. ChiO: the gang at the Roxie wondered where you were. Ark: what on earth will they think about SOUL OF A MONSTER tomorrow night??!!

I hope that you're walking on air today after your initial night focusing on Johnny O'Clock! I think many of us are with you in spirit, but I can't help wondering: Did audience members ask any particularly interesting questions about this movie, Robert Rosson, Burnett Guffey, or any of the cast members?

Hey Moira - thanks for your wonderful words of support!! This truly is a great opportunity for folks to get an eyeful of some great, seldom seen films. Even the hard-core fans are walking around slack-jawed! More and more we're seeing young men and women in their early 20s coming to see these shows at the Roxie. I think they speak to the darkly unspoken fears of today's world as well as to the fatalistically romantic notions these fears inspire. Tailor made for today's unsuspecting youth!
Judith: it's amazing Jeff C. never got a screen credit. He pops up several times in the film, whenever Thomas Gomez needs a boy harem around to underscore his macho posturing. It's easy to see why directors probably liked having him around!
