I saw his bad roles too, have you seen his early British films like The Wicked Lady? He often played the rotter. Odd Man Out was one of the first roles that he got to sink his teeth into, often he was just filling in a caricature, the wicked man that left ladies weak at the knees.
Failure is unimportant. It takes courage to make a fool of yourself - Charlie Chaplin
My memory of Caught is that Barbara Bel Geddes was miscast - would have thought Jane Greer or Lauren Bacall or Gene Tierney's would have been better and more believable as a female who would tempt the man who has everything. I also thought Ryan's character was a bit one-dimensional .
I would suggest you watch the film again, Vienna. The point of the girl's character is that she's really just a simple, regular girl aspiring to be glamorous and marry rich. Lauren, Gene and Jane are already beautiful and glamorous, so they wouldn't need to go to any transformation. The part calls for a more girl-next-door actress and I think Barbara has that quality.
